Q&A with Wallace Southerland, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students

Students walk across the Michigan Tech campus as the sun sets

Listening. Connecting. Expanding. Michigan Tech's new Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Wallace Southerland III will build on 30 years of experience and the positive relationships he inherited.

Southerland arrived on campus July 1 from Salisbury University in Maryland, where he served as the associate vice president of student affairs. In a new Q&A, Southerland shares what brought him to Michigan Tech and his preliminary strategies for working together across campus to connect with all students and help them achieve their goals.

Comedian Pete Lee!

Free late night comedy at 10 p.m. on Saturday (Aug. 28) in the Rozsa!

Pete Lee might be the nicest person in New York City, but that’s because it’s impossible to sound aggressive with a Wisconsin accent. He was raised in Janesville, Wisconsin, by divorced parents and a 19-inch television, which is probably why he pursued a career in entertainment.

Thanks to his highly rated Comedy Central Presents half-hour special, Lee has packed venues at over 500 colleges and universities across the country. He has also been a standout on NBC’s Last Comic Standing and played a doctor on the CBS soap opera "As the World Turns." You won't want to miss this event!

Tech Volleyball is Top Pick in GLIAC North Division

The Michigan Tech volleyball team is the top pick in the North Division in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Preseason Coaches' Poll after garnering four first-place votes.

Tech welcomes back its core roster from the 2021 season, including six All-GLIAC selections. The Huskies won a GLIAC regular season championship last spring for only the second time in program history and look to make their fourth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

In the 2021 Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Huskies led the North with 51 points. Northern Michigan was one point back while also taking a pair of first-place votes. Northwood (34), Wayne State (28), Saginaw Valley State (22) and Lake Superior State (10) rounded out the North in spots three through six.

Grand Valley State was the top choice in the South Division with 44 points and four first-place votes. Ferris State garnered 39 points and one vote. Davenport (31) was third followed by Parkside (19) and Purdue Northwest (12).

Reminders

Face Coverings Required Indoors on Campus

While Michigan Tech is at Health and Safety Level Two, face coverings must be worn indoors. This applies to all students, employees, and visitors, regardless of vaccination status.

In Level Two, students and employees are not required to monitor their symptoms daily prior to coming to campus. But, individuals should be mindful of their own symptoms. A useful monitoring tool is available from the CDC.

Michigan Tech strongly recommends that all employees and students receive the COVID-19 vaccine and continue with handwashing and hand-sanitizing practices, especially in light of the virulence of the COVID-19 delta variant.

During all Health and Safety Levels, no one with COVID-19 symptoms is allowed on campus.

On-Campus Jobs Expo

Career Services and Financial Aid are coordinating an On-Campus Jobs Expo on Sept. 1 from 12-3 p.m. in the Memorial Union Building Alumni Lounge.

Campus departments: Please fill out this form by Aug. 30 if you'd like to participate. We will announce participating campus departments prior to the expo, alerting students to the opportunity to meet with you at your own table.

You can also notify Career Services of the student positions you're hiring for and we will upload to Handshake any positions recorded in the form, affording students a single place where they can view and apply for these positions. You can fill out the form for each position you wish to announce.

On-campus jobs provide opportunities for Michigan Tech students. A part-time job offers income to students who need it and is an important co-curricular opportunity. As a co-curricular opportunity, on-campus work can lead to internships and co-ops, opening the door to full-time offers immediately after graduation. It can also help a student establish a strong foundation for research that leads to enhanced graduate school opportunities.

Please contact Career Services with questions at career@mtu.edu or 908-487-2313.

Digital Measures: Interface Refresh and Product Enhancement

We’re excited to share a new look and product enhancement in Digital Measures at Michigan Tech.

Watermark, the company that owns Digital Measures, has made some key changes to the look and feel of the instrument. The first thing you will notice is a change to the interface and brand naming. The instrument is now Watermark Faculty Success. However, here at Michigan Tech, we will maintain the Digital Measures terminology with a local branding of Digital Measures at Michigan Tech. These changes are reflected in the interface refresh.

In addition to the recently announced CV Imports, there is a new product update focused on making things easier for you: Dynamic Summary Screens. You’ll be able to more quickly see which activities you’ve already captured and more easily review things for completeness and accuracy. We know you are busy, so the goal here is to save you time by making data management easier.

When you log into the system next and go to any of your activity screens, you’ll see some new options that give you more control over the view. A new spreadsheet-style layout makes it easier and faster to review your records to see what’s there, avoid redundant work and verify the completeness of your information. Sorting, filtering and search options help you pinpoint specific records that need additional information, so you can close gaps more quickly. The ability to change which columns display and save those preferences from session to session gives you the power to focus on the elements that matter most for what you’re doing at that moment.

This quick video gives a sense of how easy these tools are to use.

It’s important to have your accomplishments and activities in Digital Measures for a number of reasons. Here at Michigan Tech, we use Digital Measures for promotion, tenure and reviews, as well as accreditation and unit metrics. Sharing your accomplishments and activities is key to both your and the University’s success.

If you have questions or would like assistance getting started with CV Imports, please email dm-admin@mtu.edu.
