Fall 2021 Career Fair and CareerFEST Launching Soon

Career Services is excited to announce our fall 2021 event and programming schedule. Over 40 in-person and virtual recruiting and career development events are slated for this semester. In fact, employers begin arriving on campus in less than two weeks to recruit our Husky talent!

On Sept. 2 we kick off the fall recruiting season with our first of six CareerFEST days. These in-person recruiting and networking opportunities allow employers to meet with students in an informal setting on campus — employers often bring swag, gadgets, their company's latest technology or product, etc., to encourage students to come to their tents/table to chat. No resumes, no business suits — just casual conversation.

Career Fair will be a two-day virtual event hosted on Career Fair Plus, taking place Sept. 22-23. Over 200 companies will be in attendance, making this year’s fair one of the largest virtual events in Michigan Tech history!

Career development events leading up to Career Fair and throughout the semester include:

  • Career Fair Prep Sessions
  • Resume Blitzes with Recruiters
  • Negotiation Skills
  • Design Your Career Workshops

For a comprehensive list of our events, check out the Career Services website.

ADVANCE Roundup: The Continuing Psychological Pandemic

The fall semester is about to begin and while we look forward to starting again, we must also acknowledge the lingering grief, trauma and upheaval of the past year. This week's article in Inside Higher Ed notes that many faculty, staff and administrators will continue to serve as frontline support for students and others in the campus community and beyond.

The authors call attention to “the significant emotional labor and resulting compassion fatigue that results from providing that level of support over an extended period.” Emotional labor is managing one's own feelings to prioritize and support other’s feelings. Compassion fatigue can occur when an individual takes on the trauma others feel, resulting in exhaustion or burnout and loss of productivity, leaving the individual feeling so overwhelmed that they become numb to new situations.

The article identifies several intentional institution-wide strategies for moving forward including acknowledging the short-term and long-term impacts of the last 18 months, moderating expectations to be inclusive of different people’s needs and situations, and encouraging self-care and reflection in order to promote recovery and renewal.

Today’s feature was shared with us via the Women’s Faculty listserv. If you have an article you think we should feature, please email it to advance-mtu@mtu.edu and we will consider adding it to the ADVANCE Roundup.

The ADVANCE Roundup is brought to you by ADVANCE at Michigan Tech, an NSF-funded initiative dedicated to improving faculty career success, retention, diversity, equity and inclusion. Past articles are available on the ADVANCE Newsblog.

Climate Justice Across the Lake Superior Watershed

What is climate justice and what does it mean to be a good future ancestor? Learn more Wednesday (Aug. 25) from 6-8 p.m. during the Climate Justice Across the Lake Superior Watershed webinar.

The panel will showcase stories and perspectives from folks engaged in climate action across the Lake Superior watershed and beyond. Chúk Odenigbo (Future Ancestors) will kick off the conversation with a short keynote address, followed by Shadiya Aidid (Fossil Free Lakehead), Shelby Gagnon (Indigenous Food Circle) and Candace Neveau (Baawaating Water Protectors) who will share stories and perspectives about their work in climate justice.

This event is free, open to the public, will be virtual, and will be recorded. A graphic facilitator — Corrina from Love Letters for everybody — will be illustrating this event.

Register on the event web page or through the Lake Superior Living Labs Network website.

Reminders

Face Coverings Required Indoors on Campus

While Michigan Tech is at Health and Safety Level Two, face coverings must be worn indoors. This applies to all students, employees, and visitors, regardless of vaccination status.

In Level Two, students and employees are not required to monitor their symptoms daily prior to coming to campus. But, individuals should be mindful of their own symptoms. A useful monitoring tool is available from the CDC.

Michigan Tech strongly recommends that all employees and students receive the COVID-19 vaccine and continue with handwashing and hand-sanitizing practices, especially in light of the virulence of the COVID-19 delta variant.

During all Health and Safety Levels, no one with COVID-19 symptoms is allowed on campus.
