Delays Expected for Procurement Orders

Michigan Tech IT continues to see delays in procurement of computer hardware due to supply chain and component chip demand issues.

Depending on the type of equipment, we currently see some shipping estimates as far out as November. Please keep this in mind as you prepare to order computers or components.

If you have any questions, we can help. Contact IT at it-help@mtu.edu or call 906-487-1111.

Huskies Mourn Passing of Tony Esposito

Former Michigan Tech goaltender Tony Esposito passed away Aug. 10 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He was a national champion with the Huskies in 1965, a three-time All-American, a Michigan Tech Sports Hall of Fame inductee, and one of the NHL's greatest goaltenders.

Esposito was a native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and played for the Huskies from 1964-67. He was an All-American in 1965, 1966 and 1967 and a three-time WCHA honoree. He was the only netminder in WCHA history to win three league goaltending championships and earned NCAA All-Tournament honors as a member of Michigan Tech's 1965 NCAA championship squad. Esposito was inducted into the Michigan Tech Sports Hall of Fame as an individual in 1991 and with the 1965 National Championship Team in 2014.

Esposito went on to play 17 NHL seasons for Montreal and Chicago and was a five-time NHL All-Star and three-time Vezina Trophy winner as the top NHL goaltender in 1970, 1972 and 1974. He earned the Calder Memorial Trophy as the top NHL Rookie in 1970. His career NHL record of 423-306-151 ranks 10th in league history and his number 35 is retired by the Blackhawks. He was a member of Montreal's 1969 Stanley Cup Championship Team and was named one of the NHL's 100 Greatest Players in 2017.

Sunil Mehendale (MMET) co-authored a research article titled "Research on the phase transition process of sessile droplet on carbon fiber cold surface," which has been accepted for publication in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Journal of Thermal Science and Engineering.

The article describes how the droplet phase transition process on the cold surface of a carbon fiber substrate was studied by observing the droplet freezing process. The experiments involved visualizing and measuring the progression of the solid-liquid interface during the phase transition process and the droplet deformation rate. The phase interface presented an irregular wave shape early on and a smooth concave shape later in the freezing process.

This study provides good data and ideas for designing anti/de-icing of carbon fiber equipment operating in low-temperature environments in industrial refrigeration, aerospace and other situations.

Reminders

Michigan Tech Shifting to Health and Safety Level Two on Sunday

Michigan Tech will return to Health and Safety Level Two as outlined in our MTU Flex plan, effective Sunday (Aug. 15), for at least five weeks. This includes reinstating an indoor face covering requirement for all faculty, staff, students, and visitors (regardless of vaccination status).

Michigan Tech strongly recommends that all employees and students receive the COVID-19 vaccine and continue with handwashing and hand-sanitizing practices, especially in light of the virulence of the COVID-19 delta variant.

Until the shift to Health and Safety Level Two, face coverings are not required. However, those who wish to wear a face covering are encouraged to do so.
