Husky-Built Beach Warning System Helps Keep Swimmers Safe

Since lifeguards and flag warning systems are a rarity on Great Lakes beaches, two engineers and entrepreneurs found a faster, cheaper, technological solution to help prevent drownings.

Husky grad Jake Soter ’19 ’20 and Andrew Barnard (ME-EM/GLRC) co-founded SwimSmart Warning Systems — and two of Lake Michigan’s busiest Michigan beaches are using the smart-connected device (modeled after a traffic light) to help beachgoers decide if it’s safe to go in the water.

On the (Virtual) Road

Michigan Tech Ph.D. student Monica Mame Soma Nyansa (Chem) participated as an expert panelist during a recent session of ACS Publications’ "Changing the Culture of Chemistry" webinar series.

The panel discussed many of the misconceptions around lab safety and how to change the culture of chemistry from the perspectives of early-career researchers, laboratory managers and senior management in administrative roles. They also shared some things people can do (regardless of their career level) to create a workplace culture that values health and safety. Together, they showed the audience how communication and culture can lead to workplaces where everyone can feel safe.

In Print

Graduate student Steven Whitaker (ECE), Timothy Havens (CC/ICC) and Andrew Barnard (ME-EM/GLRC) are co-authors of a paper published in The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America.

The paper is titled "Recurrent networks for direction-of-arrival identification of an acoustic source in a shallow water channel using a vector sensor."

Also listed as a co-author is George Anderson of the U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport, Rhode Island.

The work described in the paper was funded by the U.S. NUWC and Naval Engineering Education Consortium and the Office of Naval Research.

Reminders

Get Vaccinated, Continue Washing and Sanitizing Hands

While Michigan Tech is at Health and Safety Level One, face coverings and daily symptom monitoring are no longer required. However, those who wish to continue wearing a face covering are encouraged to do so.

The MTU Flex Task Force also encourages University community members to get their vaccinations and continue with handwashing and hand-sanitizing practices.

Spots Still Available for Summer Reading Facilitators!

Faculty and staff are invited to facilitate a student group discussion for Michigan Tech’s Reading as Inquiry project. This year, first-year students will be reading "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline.

A world at stake. A quest for the ultimate prize. Are you ready?

In the year 2045, reality is an ugly place. The only time Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the OASIS, a vast virtual world where most of humanity spends their days. When the eccentric creator of the OASIS dies, he leaves behind a series of fiendish puzzles, based on his obsession with the pop culture of decades past. Whoever is first to solve them will inherit his vast fortune — and control of the OASIS itself. Then Wade cracks the first clue. Suddenly he’s beset by rivals who’ll kill to take this prize. The race is on — and the only way to survive is to win.

The Reading as Inquiry program is also heading in a new direction. This fall, in lieu of the author speaking, we will be hosting a faculty panel addressing themes from the book that align with furthering the conversation about the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the Tech Forward initiatives. Additionally, the small group discussions will serve not only as book discussions, but also as a means of preparing first-year students to participate in the panel discussion.

Facilitators will lead a small group discussion of approximately 25 first-year students with assistance from upper-level students during Orientation Week. A facilitator information session will be held in August and the student group discussions are scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 25, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The faculty panel will follow the book discussions from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25.

If you are interested in serving as a facilitator, register online. Facilitators will receive a free copy of the book.

Contact success@mtu.edu with any questions.

My SSP: Telemental Health Services for Students, Resources for Faculty and Staff

The Center for Student Mental Health and Well-being is excited to offer telemental health services to Michigan Tech students through My SSP (student support program).

In addition to the support the Center always provides, My SSP gives students access to free, confidential counseling services for crisis and ongoing support, providing effective and convenient means for students to access support via telephone, chat, video and mobile app. This service is being offered to currently enrolled Tech students at no additional charge.

My SSP offers significant benefits. Students have 24/7 access to crisis assistance and can schedule appointments at any time — day or night. Students can choose phone, video or assistance with referral to community resources to meet their time demands. Co-op? Study abroad? Out of state? No problem. Where on-campus appointments might be limited on a given day, My SSP appointments are always available to Michigan Tech students regardless of location.

Additionally, My SSP includes multilingual support options and identity and culture matching for students of all backgrounds.

It’s not just for students! Faculty and staff can call and speak with a counselor to get advice on how to help a student, or use the app to read about resources that can help with difficult student situations, like how to talk to a student about mental health or get an assisted referral.

Students, faculty and staff can download the app in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, or check out the program at myssp.app.

Learn more about this partnership or request a presentation or training for your department or organization.
