Diversity Council Reorganization Will Enhance DEIS Communication

To strengthen Michigan Technological University’s communication on issues related to diversity, equity, inclusion and a sense of belonging (DEIS), the University’s Diversity Council has been given a new charge.

Effective fall 2021, the Diversity Council will serve as a communication hub between the leaders of colleges/major administrative units and the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion (VPDI). This charge was developed with the purpose of coordinating policies and issues that impact goals related to DEIS at Michigan Tech.

In conjunction with this new focus for the Diversity Council, the President’s Council Task Force for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion has also established two new bodies on campus: the Student DEIS Commission and DEIS Alumni Advisory Board.

Jesse Jacobusse Named to Academic All-America Third Team

Michigan Tech soccer forward/midfielder Jesse Jacobusse has been selected to the 2020-21 Academic All-America Third Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Tuesday.

The selection recognizes Jacobusse as one of the nation's top student-athletes for her combined performances on the field and in the classroom.

On the Road

Mark Rhodes (SS) led the organization of a series of sessions on memory and geography at the Memory Studies Association (MSA) Annual Conference, being held July 5-9.

Three paper sessions — Narratives in Space and Place, Ruins and Rights - Urban Memory Politics, and Racial Justice — bring together 20 scholars to explore the range in which the fields of geography and memory studies intersect.

The fourth discussion session — Innovations and Intersections — will explore how to best establish a more permanent and sustainable relationship between human geographers and the 1,500-plus and growing MSA and the inherently spatial aspects of memory studies.

Rhodes was joined by co-organizers Jordan Brasher of Columbus State, Derek Alderman of Tennessee and Rebecca Sheehan of Oklahoma State.

Reminders

Get Vaccinated, Continue Washing and Sanitizing Hands

While Michigan Tech is at Health and Safety Level One, face coverings and daily symptom monitoring are no longer required. However, those who wish to continue wearing a face covering are encouraged to do so.

The MTU Flex Task Force also encourages University community members to get their vaccinations and continue with handwashing and hand-sanitizing practices.
