Why Do We Celebrate Pride Month?

In her guest blog, Erin Matas, director of the Van Pelt and Opie Library, reflects on Pride Month, the Stonewall Riots, and what it means to celebrate these events’ 50th anniversary.

“It’s 1969,” Matas writes. "Serving alcohol is illegal in disorderly businesses — and the presence of gay folks automatically categorizes your bar or club as disorderly.”

SDC, Gates Tennis Center, Tech Trails Adjust Facility Guidelines

In keeping with recently updated University, state and federal guidelines, the Michigan Tech Student Development Complex (SDC), Gates Tennis Center and Tech Trails are adjusting facility guidelines.

On June 22, Michigan Tech announced a move to a Health and Safety Level One.

Notable Level One changes:

  • Face coverings are no longer required for any individual, although those who wish to continue to wear them are encouraged to do so.
  • Daily symptom monitoring via the MTU Flex Portal for employees, students, and visitors is no longer required, but we recommend people continue to monitor their symptoms. For students, access to Canvas will no longer be linked to symptom monitoring.
  • All capacity limits are lifted.

The Michigan Tech Recreation staff encourages all patrons to please continue frequent handwashing (especially before and after meals) and hand sanitization, and receive a COVID-19 vaccination.

The SDC is open to current Michigan Tech students, members and action pass holders. SDC membership and locker sales for the general public will resume on July 1. Daily passes and action passes will not be put back on sale for the time being.

RCR Training Now Required for Funded Undergraduate Researchers

Federal law requires that undergraduate research assistants on funded research projects must complete responsible conduct of research (RCR) training. Accordingly, the Research Integrity Office has created an online RCR course tailored for undergraduate researchers at Michigan Tech.

Undergraduate research assistants can enroll in the RCR training course online and must complete the course by July 14.

Required learning modules in this short course discuss:

  • Research Misconduct
  • Data Management
  • Research with Human Subjects
  • Research with Animal Subjects

In addition to these four required modules, 12 optional modules on topics ranging from Authorship to Presentation of Research Findings and Reproducibility of Research Results allow supervisors and students to customize their RCR training.

The overall goals of RCR training are to empower researchers with the ability to make responsible and ethical decisions about their research and to provide researchers with an understanding of common mistakes that can derail an otherwise successful research program.

For more information, contact the Research Integrity Office at 906-487-2902 or researchintegrity@mtu.edu
