Campus Master Plan: Join Us for a Virtual Town Hall

University leadership would like to give the campus community the opportunity to hear from us and learn more about the Campus Master Plan process from the consultant team.

Because we could not host an in-person event this spring, we’re planning a 60-minute virtual town hall next Wednesday (June 9) at 2 p.m. The session will be more than informational — it's also intended to spark conversation around a series of emerging themes.

Please join us virtually — register today and add the event to your calendar. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

Town hall participants will:

  • Hear opening comments from President Rick Koubek and CFO Sue Kerry
  • See a short overview presentation from the SmithGroup consultant team
  • Break into groups for breakout room discussion
  • Share group discussion highlights with the full group
  • Continue the discussion in the Campus Master Plan online forum

Application Open for Michigan Tech Sustainable and Resilient Communities Faculty Research Fellowship

The Tech Forward Initiative on Sustainability and Resilience is accepting applications for the Michigan Tech Sustainable and Resilient Communities Faculty Research Fellowship.

Fellows will receive support to buy out one or more courses from their teaching responsibilities in the spring 2022 or fall 2022 semester.

Fellows will be expected to:

  1. Develop and submit proposals to external funding opportunities;
  2. Establish a relationship with an existing center and institute to build support for sustainability and resilience research on campus; and
  3. Participate in Sustainable and Resilient Communities Social Network and Research Collaborative (SRC-squared) events during the 2021-22 academic year.

Potential applicants are required to provide information about their potential projects via the pre-proposal Google form. Applicants will be contacted (within two weeks of submitting the form) and potentially encouraged to submit a full application.

The full application will require:

  • A list of funding opportunities (submission deadline, max budget, link to solicitation);
  • One paragraph describing planned submission;
  • A list of (expected) team members, with indication of confirmed collaborators and collaborators to be invited (not more than one page);
  • A brief explanation of how these projects, if funded, align with sustainability and resilience research and how this fellowship opportunity would allow pursuit of new opportunities that otherwise would not be pursued (not more than one page); and
  • A letter of support from the supervising chair or dean, with budget requirement indicated.

Particularly encouraged elements include transdisciplinary and convergent teams, a combination of teams experienced in collaboration and new collaborative teams, a combination of teams internal to Michigan Tech and teams including external collaborators, and a clear connection to growing the visibility of sustainability and resilience research at Michigan Tech.

Applicants should consider as a general benchmark submitting a minimum of three funding proposals totaling a minimum of $2 million, although more proposals and larger funding amounts are encouraged, as are creative pursuits of funding opportunities outside of this general benchmark.

The Tech Forward Initiative on Sustainability and Resilience welcomes and encourages inquiries about this opportunity! Please contact Chelsea Schelly at cschelly@mtu.edu with any questions.

Participants Needed for Sleep Quality Research Study

Hello! We are seeking participants in our research study to improve sleep quality at home after doing some exercises in the daytime or by sleeping extra in the morning.

You will be required to wear a wristwatch-like device that will calculate sleep quality and a blood pressure monitor. You will also need to fill out some forms and questionnaires. On four busy, nonconsecutive days, you will be asked to either do some exercises or sleep in for approximately 60 minutes.

If you are interested, please look at the flyer for inclusion/exclusion criteria.

Please contact Aditi Vyas at aditiv@mtu.edu or Brigitte Morin at bemorin@mtu.edu for further details.

'Sacred Spaces' Choral Performances Now Online

A series of choral performances, “Music in Sacred Spaces,” performed by conScience: Michigan Tech Chamber Singers, can now be experienced online at no cost.

The performances were conducted by Jared Anderson (VPA). He said the group ensured it could perform safely and maintained social distancing at the venues and during rehearsals, which were held in the expansive lobby of the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts.

“If you have ever sung in a choir you know the joy of singing in beautiful spaces,” Anderson said. “So much choral literature is composed with large, resonant spaces in mind. These spaces, often places of worship, invoke a feeling of awe and wonder through their expansiveness and their sound.“

Anderson also emphasized his thanks to each congregation and their leaders for allowing the chamber choir to perform and record in the spaces.

The series, as well as programming details from each performance, can be found on the Music in Sacred Spaces web page.

Parade of Nations Chooses Logo Contest Winner

We have a Parade of Nations logo for 2021.

From more than 50 entries, the Parade of Nations Committee has picked a design by Emma Riita Moilanen, a sixth grader at Dollar Bay School. She will receive a $200 prize.

Moilanen's logo represents the theme of this year’s Parade of Nations: The World is Calling. It features a personalized globe saying “hello” in many languages.

“Thank you so much for picking my design,” Moilanen said. “I am very grateful and honored. I picked this design so I could show diversity using the different languages of the world. I am excited to see it used for the parade.”

The committee also chose a design by Andre Cole to serve as the permanent logo for the Parade of Nations. Cole, who is Jamaican and lives in the United Kingdom, designed a logo featuring a globe filled with colorful flags of the world. He will receive a $100 prize.

“There are three responses to a piece of design — yes, no, and WOW!” said Cole. “Wow is the one to aim for."

The Parade of Nations will be held Sept. 18. For more information, go to the Parade of Nations web page.
