Summer Youth Programs Introduce Students to Adventures in Natural Resources

Sierra Williams, College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science outreach coordinator and Michigan Tech Summer Youth Programs (SYP) instructor, loves seeing her students get up close and personal with the natural world for the first time.

“The most rewarding part about teaching SYP courses is getting to witness the light bulb moments that participants have when they begin to meet the intersection of passion, curiosity, and understanding for a particular subject,” says Williams.

Under her guidance this summer, students explore the wild and wonderful world of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula through a variety of hands-on activities and field trips. In “Ecosystem Explorers: Introduction to Natural Resources,” students get their first look at forestry, wildlife ecology, and environmental science practices. Students who sign up for “Outdoor Field Skills in Natural Resources” step into the shoes of a natural resource professional and learn the practical skills needed to safely traverse the forest, streams, and lakes of the Keweenaw. The “Wildlife Ecology and Conservation” course teaches students how wildlife and ecosystems are studied, monitored, and managed.

Updates for Minimally-Managed Devices

Michigan Tech IT is implementing a new process to ensure that all minimally-managed Windows devices remain in security compliance.

Just like fully-managed university systems, minimally-managed devices must be patched and compliant with University standards and policies to connect to campus authentication, management, and security systems. Computers that don't connect to our network for extended periods miss important software patches and security updates and become a security risk to the network.

If your university-managed Windows device remains inactive and does not check in with our management systems for an extended period, you will begin receiving automated email notifications. These alerts are designed to warn you before any action is taken.

  • First Notice: We'll send an initial email if a device hasn't checked in with our Azure management system for more than 30 days.
  • Second Notice: If the device still hasn't connected for more than 90 days, it will be disabled and must be physically delivered to the library IT Service Desk to be reactivated and updated.

To prevent disruption, please power on your minimally-managed device and make sure it connects to the campus network regularly (or use a VPN if you are off campus) so it can get updates.

For more details on device management, please read these KB articles:

If you have questions about minimally-managed systems, we can help. Email IT or call 906-487-1111.

Summer Proposal Development Meetups Begin on Wednesday

This summer, the Research Development team is once again hosting weekly Proposal Development Meetups to help the campus community with their proposals. Meetups will be on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to noon, starting June 3 and running through July 15. While this timing aligns well with those working on National Science Foundation CAREER submissions, all are welcome to join, regardless of which funding opportunity you are pursuing.

These informal, weekly meetups can help you refine your research ideas and writing angles and can also function as regular accountability checkpoints to help ensure you are making progress toward your goal.

The meetups are intended to be flexible, but will generally follow this format:

  • Check-in (5-10 minutes): Share what you will focus on in the sprint.

  • Focus (45 minutes): Find your state of flow. A facilitator will run a timer so you can ignore the clock.

  • Check-out (5-10 minutes): Share your wins, stretch, move and discuss.

We’ll use the Van Pelt and Opie Library as a central hub for in-person meetups and will provide a Zoom option to allow remote participation. The library meeting location will vary a bit from week to week, rotating between the cafe area, the Library 103 conference room and the outdoor plaza when the weather allows.

So, come and join us to work with the Research Development team and connect with colleagues from across campus. Bring writing with you. Bring your questions. Bring ideas to refine. Just come — we look forward to seeing you!

Please reach out to rd-l@mtu.edu with any questions.

It is structured with a strong educational emphasis, particularly aimed at graduate students and early-career researchers across STEM disciplines. The mornings will be devoted to lectures on modern high-accuracy numerical techniques, while the afternoons will feature research talks covering a broad range of topics, including, but not limited to, recent advances in the discretization of differential and integral operators, as well as methods based on rational functions, radial basis functions (RBFs), and finite difference approaches. It is a free workshop intended for graduate students, postdoctoral students, researchers, and faculty of all STEM fields. Please spread the word and register to help us plan for refreshments. Parking has been reserved in Lot 26, just up the hill from the Noblet building. Follow the signs along 7th Ave to the designated parking area.
