Summer Proposal Development Meetups Begin on Wednesday

This summer, the Research Development team is once again hosting weekly Proposal Development Meetups to help the campus community with their proposals. Meetups will be on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to noon, starting this week on Wednesday, June 3, and running through July 15. While this timing aligns well with those working on National Science Foundation CAREER submissions, all are welcome to join, regardless of which funding opportunity you are pursuing.

These informal, weekly meetups can help you refine your research ideas and writing angles and can also function as regular accountability checkpoints to help ensure you are making progress toward your goal.

The meetups are intended to be flexible, but will generally follow this format:

  • Check-in (5-10 minutes): Share what you will focus on in the sprint.

  • Focus (45 minutes): Find your state of flow. A facilitator will run a timer so you can ignore the clock.

  • Check-out (5-10 minutes): Share your wins, stretch, move and discuss.

We’ll use the Van Pelt and Opie Library as a central hub for in-person meetups and will provide a Zoom option to allow remote participation. The library meeting location will vary a bit from week to week, rotating between the cafe area, the Library 103 conference room and the outdoor plaza when the weather allows.

So, come and join us to work with the Research Development team and connect with colleagues from across campus. Bring writing with you. Bring your questions. Bring ideas to refine. Just come — we look forward to seeing you!

Please reach out to rd-l@mtu.edu with any questions.

On the Road

Sarah Scarlett (SS) and Lindsay Hiltunen (VPOL) were invited speakers at the Communities in Conversation: Towards Community-Based, Shared Stewardship in Michigan Archives Symposium on May 21 and 22. The symposium was held at the University of Michigan and welcomed diverse speakers and attendees throughout the country.

As part of the symposium’s lead-off panel, Hiltunen and Scarlett worked with Eric Gollannek of the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society and Sarah Lundy of Hope College to examine collaborations between archival repositories, libraries and local communities to preserve community histories in ways that are responsive to community needs.

Hiltunen presented on the archival origins of the Keweenaw Time Traveler (KeTT) and the importance of listening to collaborators outside of the Van Pelt and Opie Library during the project as well as outreach opportunities as the platform continues to grow. Scarlett reviewed 10 years of community engagement in building the KeTT and recent collaborations with heritage partners, including running the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)-sponsored Community Deep Mapping Institute in 2025.

To learn more about the KeTT project or to explore the map, be sure to visit the Keweenaw Time Traveler online.
