Mathematical Sciences Workshop: Applied and Numerical Mathematics

A free three-day workshop on "Applied and Numerical Mathematics” for Michigan Tech graduate and postdoctoral students, researchers and faculty in all STEM fields will be hosted by the Mathematical Sciences Department beginning Monday, June 8, and running through Wednesday, June 10. All sessions will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Noblet G002. Refreshments will be provided.

The workshop will bring together leading international experts from across the field of numerical analysis with a central focus on high-order methods for solving partial differential equations. Structured with a strong educational emphasis, sessions are specifically aimed at graduate students and early-career researchers in STEM disciplines. Mornings will be devoted to lectures on modern high-accuracy numerical techniques. Afternoons will feature research talks covering a broad range of topics, including recent advances in the discretization of differential and integral operators, methods based on rational functions, radial basis functions, finite difference approaches and more.

Please spread the word and register to help us plan for refreshments!

This workshop is funded by generous gifts from Igor Kliakhandler, the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Michigan Tech and the Applied Mathematics Department at University of Colorado Boulder.

In the News

Erika Vye (GLRC) was a guest on the May 22 episode of Michigan Public’s “Beyond the Shore” radio show, where she discussed the geologic origins of Lake Superior, the formation of the Keweenaw Peninsula and the region’s rich copper deposits.

The Munising Beacon featured Michigan Tech staff members Vinicius Vinhaes and Robert Waara (both APSRC) in an article titled “ACRES hosts data mining, AI and crypto presentation.” The article highlighted a recent Alger County Renewable Energy Solutions community presentation on artificial intelligence, data mining and the growing energy demands of emerging technologies.

WZMQ 19 News mentioned Michigan Tech in a story about the inaugural Michigan Sustainable Tourism Summit, which brought tourism leaders to campus to discuss destination stewardship and sustainable tourism practices.

The Detroit Free Press mentioned Michigan Tech alum Jeff Weyhmiller ’97 (B.S. Mechanical Engineering) in a story about his appearance as a contestant on the television game show “Jeopardy!” on May 22.

Uncovering Patterns: AI for Earth & Planetary Discovery

Earth science is generating more data than ever—but turning that data into discovery is a challenge. This seminar explores how new AI tools are being designed to make sense of complex, diverse geoscience data. Learn how machine learning is being applied to detect potential biosignatures using advanced chemical analysis techniques, and how data-driven methods can predict previously unknown mineral deposits on Earth—and even Mars. You’ll also get a glimpse of new open-source tools that help uncover patterns in the atomic structures of minerals. Anirudh Prabhu is a Research Scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science who applies data science and machine learning to study Earth and planetary systems. He holds a PhD from RPI and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Geoscience Data Journal. This event is sponsored by the College of Computing, Department of Geological & Mining & Engineering Sciences and the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum.
