Request For Proposals for Little Huskies Childcare Services

As a public university, Michigan Tech periodically seeks public bids for third-party services. Over the last month, we have initiated a formal bid process to evaluate potential service providers for Little Huskies Child Development Center. The review process for those bids is currently underway.

Our evaluation will be guided by the following priorities:

  • The ability to provide high-quality care
  • A demonstrated commitment to safety
  • Reliability and consistency of service
  • A trustworthy and nurturing environment for children
  • Financial accessibility for families

Our intention is to complete this review and select a bid by the end of May. During this process, we welcome thoughts, questions and feedback from our campus community.

If you would like to share your comments as part of this process, please feel free to email us at childcare@mtu.edu.

First-Ever UP Summer Reading Challenge Is On!

Often friends and occasionally rivals, folks at Michigan Technological University’s Van Pelt and Opie Library and the libraries of Northern Michigan University and Lake Superior State University got together and decided it was time to have a little challenge.

This summer, students, staff, faculty and community borrowers from MTU, NMU and LSSU will compete against each other to see which university can read the most books comparatively.

To participate in the first-ever U.P. Summer Reading Challenge, fill out the participation form each time you read a book this summer. The challenge runs through Aug. 31, and the winner of its much-sought-after pasty trophy will be announced on Sept. 7.

MTU Readers: Be sure to check out the Van Pelt and Opie Library’s snazzy guide for all the details of the challenge, including ways to earn extra points for Michigan Tech by reading in special categories each month!

Please direct any questions to library@mtu.edu.

In the News

Scientific American quoted Paul van Susante (MAE) in a story about the possibility (and feasibility) of mining helium-3 on the moon. Described as “spectacularly useful” and “vanishingly rare on Earth,” the isotope has potential use in quantum computing, medical imaging and future fusion energy technologies. Van Susante noted the challenges involved in its extraction and the scaling of technology.

Discover Magazine quoted Kristin Brzeski (CFRES) in a story about “ghost wolves” on Galveston Island, coyotes carrying red wolf DNA that researchers say could help support conservation and genetic diversity efforts for the critically endangered red wolf.

SMT007 Magazine published a feature story written by the Michigan Tech Electronics Hub about Stories & Semiconductors, a new field trip, website and educational series for fourth graders that teaches participating students about electronic device technology by having them build it instead of just reading about it. Chris Middlebrook (ECE) and partners Joseph Licavoli-Wall (MSE) and MTU alum Emily Geiger ’11 ’15 (B.S. Ph.D. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) led the hub in publishing the article.

Owosso’s Argus-Press mentioned Michigan Tech in a story about the upcoming launch of the Owosso Time Traveler, an interactive digital map modeled on the Keweenaw Time Traveler. Using online geographic information systems, the project displays historic maps, photos and documents in layers across modern satellite images of the city.

WLUC TV6 mentioned Michigan Tech in a story about the Junior Achievement Girls’ Dream Fair, an event designed to encourage middle school students to explore STEM careers through hands-on activities and conversations with women working in STEM fields.
