Everyone, Everywhere, All at Once

In the latest issue of Gateway Magazine, Michigan Tech’s College of Computing observes its five-year anniversary through the lens of the present moment and trains its sights on what’s ahead.

“We’re in a strange and wonderful transitory place. We’re not new, yet we’re still young. There’s still a feeling of novelty and a surprising cadence of things we haven’t done before,” writes Dennis Livesay, Dave House Dean of Computing. “Get ready. That feeling is going to continue.”

For a forecast of what’s to come, read Livesay’s full essay in this year’s Gateway Magazine.

Smith Building Closed Today Due to Power Outage

Due to a scheduled power outage, the R. L. Smith Building — including all Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) offices, labs, classrooms and conference rooms — will be closed today, Oct. 16.

Please do not enter the building during this time. The power shutdown is required for ongoing construction, and we have not been informed which systems, if any, will remain operational.

Mind Trekkers' OneUP Superior Shores Festival Welcomes 600 Middle Schoolers

On Oct. 7, the Michigan Tech Mind Trekkers hosted the OneUP Superior Shores Festival at Northern Michigan University.

In collaboration with UP Michigan Works!, the MiSTEM Network and NMU, the event welcomed over 600 middle school students from across Michigan’s central Upper Peninsula. Students engaged in more than 50 interactive demonstrations highlighting STEM fields and related career opportunities.

With support from academic, community and industry partners, students explored in-demand careers, discovered the educational pathways that lead to them and learned about local resources available to support their future success.

To learn more about this event or connect with Mind Trekkers at a future festival, please contact mindtrekkers@mtu.edu.

Building Towards Better Courses: Ongoing Improvement to Strengthen Learning in Essential Education

As introduced in last week’s Essential Education article, Michigan Tech’s Essential Abilities (EA) continuous improvement process is a faculty-driven effort to enhance student learning through intentional course planning, EA assessment, and reflection. At its center are two core course-level activities:

  • Completing the Planning Tool at the start of each semester to identify targeted EAs, align assignments and request support.

  • EA Reporting, a reflective process at the semester’s end that documents student outcomes and improvements made, and plans for continued course enhancement.

This is not just a compliance task — it’s a meaningful approach to teaching that empowers faculty, supports student progress and connects individual courses to the larger goals of the Essential Ed program.

Why It Matters
The EA process builds a sustainable cycle of improvement:

At the course level, the EA process:

  • Aligns course design with learning goals (the EAs) from the start
  • Supports instructors in noticing and addressing challenges as they arise
  • Encourages reflective teaching
  • Links course planning directly to student outcomes

At the program level, the EA process highlights effective teaching practices, offering instructors the chance to share successes and be recognized. This, in turn, leads to improvements in teaching methods, support systems and the overall structure and effectiveness of program delivery.

What’s Coming: A Three-Year Improvement Cycle
Launching in fall 2026, the new three-year cycle provides structure while keeping the workload manageable.

  • Year 1: Course Planning Tool + EA Reports for 1-2 courses
  • Year 2: Course Planning Tool + short update or EA Report
  • Year 3: Course Planning Tool only; time for reflection, peer learning or improvements

Peer reviewers will provide individualized feedback and help identify trends to inform program development and faculty support.

Soft Launch: Fall 2025 to Spring 2026
This year, EA Reporting is being piloted in select first-year courses like composition, foundations, and lower-level math and science. Instructors in these courses will submit end-of-semester EA Reports using a provided template and sample student work.

What You Can Do Now
Whether you're submitting this year or in 2026, here’s how to prepare:

  • Review the EA Report template
  • Revisit your course’s EA alignment
  • Explore Instructor EA Reporting (Canvas Resource Hub)
  • Plan for meaningful data collection

Reach out to essentialed@mtu.edu for support. This is a shared process, and your participation will shape how the system evolves.

Visit the Essential Education Newsblog to learn more about Essential Ed's process for continuous improvement.

How to Prevent Calendar-Based Phishing Messages

A new phishing trend is emerging at Michigan Tech and other schools: fake calendar invitations. These appear as meeting requests that often mention a cryptocurrency purchase, a membership renewal (like for Geek Squad or Norton), or other similar financial activity.

Because people use the calendar in different ways, we are not applying a single calendar setting for everyone at Michigan Tech. However, to reduce your risk from calendar phishing, we encourage you to change your Google Calendar settings. This update will prevent new calendar invitations from unknown people outside of Michigan Tech from automatically displaying on your calendar.

To make the change:

  1. Open Google Calendar and click the Settings icon (gear) at the top right.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. On the left, under the "General" heading, select "Event settings."
  4. Next to "Add invitations to my calendar," select the dropdown menu and choose "Only if the sender is known."

If you have any questions about phishing or email security, we can help. Email IT or call 906-487-1111.

On the Road

Michigan Tech participated in the annual Michigan Alliance for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) conference, held in Marquette from Oct. 3-5.

Erika Vye (GLRC/GMES), Daniel Lizzadro-McPherson (GRF/GLRC) and James Juip (GRF/SS) delivered an oral presentation titled “Superior Storytellers: the Geoheritage Summer Internship Experience.”

Participating youth interns from Michigan’s Keweenaw Bay region had the opportunity to present at their first professional conference. Nathaniel Cadeau of L’Anse, William Jiang of Houghton, Andres Marin of Hancock, Damian Skotarczyk of Calumet and Greysen Webster of Houghton presented their reflections on the two-week geoheritage internship, an experience that explores the interconnected geologic and human stories that shape our relationships with land and water.

MAEOE is a nonprofit, membership-based organization led by a volunteer board of directors that supports, inspires and empowers a diverse network of individuals with a passion for environmental and outdoor learning.

About Uncle Jumbo Uncle Jumbo is a Texas born son of a Disco and Reggae DJ, who got his start, as a four year old, playing accordion with touring Zydeco bands on the front porch of his Aunt Helen’s house in Louisiana. After spending years blending the grooves of Hip Hop and Soul, new inspiration struck deeply when he heard the first rhythm of his daughter’s heartbeat. Soon after, Jumbo and family held tightly to music as a way of bringing hope and healing to their home, when his daughter was diagnosed with a rare liver disease at birth. This led to the evolution of Jumbo turning his musical focus into creating heartfelt, uniting and jammin’ music for children everywhere, in an effort to help raise generations of positive, loving people. Uncle Jumbo has released 5 albums, with "Taste The Sky" earning a GRAMMY nomination for Best Children's Music album in 2024.
