Security Awareness Training for MTU Employees

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and Michigan Tech will be assigning mandatory training to all employees to be completed during the month.

Starting tomorrow, Oct. 1, all employees will receive an enrollment email with links and details, after which you’ll have four weeks to complete the training program. The email's sender will appear as "Michigan Tech IT" and it will be sent from the email address it-help@mtu.edu. The subject line will be "Michigan Tech Security Awareness Training."

This training is designed to:

  • Help you identify phishing and other social engineering attacks.
  • Help you recognize other threats and teach ways to respond to them.
  • Demonstrate how you can support our information security and IT staff in protecting MTU data and technology.

The training contains multiple modules and should take about 45 minutes to complete. The modules do not all need to be completed in one sitting, but each individual module must be completed in a single viewing.

Thank you for your support of this security awareness training initiative. If you have any questions, we can help. Email IT or call 906-487-1111.

Poetry and Prose: An Evening of Michigan Literature

Join Department of Humanities faculty members M. Bartley Seigel and Stephanie Carpenter tomorrow, Oct. 1, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Calumet Public Library as they read from their most recent works.

Seigel’s “In the Bone-Cracking Cold” (Wayne State University Press, 2025) is a collection of artfully wrought poems tracing the intimate contours of self, nature and history through the backdrop of the Upper Peninsula. Seigel’s work navigates the terrain of the tangible and the mythical to capture the essence of the region’s mining towns and dense forests and the vastness of Lake Superior.

Carpenter’s literary historical novel “Moral Treatment” (Central Michigan University Press, 2025) is set in 1889-90 at a psychiatric hospital modeled after the former Northern Michigan Asylum in her hometown of Traverse City. In alternating sections, “Moral Treatment” tells the stories of the hospital’s aging medical superintendent and newly admitted 17-year-old Amy Underwood. The novel unfolds across the course of a year as the characters navigate a space that’s intended to heal yet often causes harm.

A book signing will follow the reading and books will be available for purchase as a fundraiser to benefit the library.

Haze: A Hazing Documentary

Gordie Bailey was 18 years old when he died in 2004 as a result of hazing-related alcohol overdose, only three weeks after starting his freshman year of college. He was found face down on the floor. No one called for help until it was too late. The HAZE film weaves together a collection of interviews, many by national experts on the subjects of hazing and alcohol misuse, with Gordie's story. The original documentary and the 2018 update were directed by Pete Schuermann, who includes among his credits film projects for the Walt Disney Company, MGM Lions Gate, Raytheon, and Yamaha. Since 2008, more than 630 high schools, colleges, and other organizations have purchased the film to incorporate into their educational and prevention efforts. More than 1 million high school and college students have seen HAZE. Join us for a brief film (38 minutes) and a facilitated conversation about hazing. Everyone is welcome, and this is a free event! If you have questions about the film, room accessibility, or the topic of hazing, please reach out to Student Leadership and Involvement at activities@mtu.edu or in MUB 112.
