K-Day Moving Inside!

When students spend all summer getting ready to search for Blizzard in Chassell, of course, it decides to rain! The forecast for today calls for rain and high winds, but we don’t cancel K-Day — we pack up and move inside!

K-Day's new indoor location is the Student Development Complex (SDC) Multipurpose Room, where over 220 student organizations will showcase what they are all about. Food, inflatables and fun will all continue in a modified form, but our Husky Spirit will remain the same!

K-Day will still run from 1-5 p.m. Students are encouraged to scatter their arrival times in order to decrease congestion in our indoor space.

MTU faculty and staff, please encourage your students to join in the fun!

Tailoring Solid-Liquid Interfaces: Fundamentals & Applications

Biomedical Engineering Research Seminar Arun K. Kota, Ph.D. North Caroline State University Abstract Solid-liquid interfaces are ubiquitous in nature and technology, ranging from droplets on plant leaves and animal skins to blood interacting with biomedical devices to vapors condensing on a condenser. The past two decades have seen significant advances in understanding and tailoring solid-liquid interfaces. In this talk, I will discuss the fundamental physical and chemical principles behind tailoring solid-liquid interfaces. Building on these fundamental principles, I will present examples of superomniphobic surfaces, which are extremely repellent to virtually all liquids. Then, I will present a few examples of stimuli-responsive surfaces with applications in protective clothing and liquidhandling robots. Next, I will discuss the design of novel and counter-intuitive surfaces with applications in anti-thrombotic biomedical implants. Finally, I will wrap up with the design of surfaces for enhanced condensation and anti-icing . Bio Dr. Kota received BS in Chemical Engineering from Andhra University (India), MS in Chemical Engineering from Clarkson University, PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland and was a postdoctoral researcher in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan. With expertise in surface and interfacial science, he conducts interdisciplinary research that is both fundamental and applied.
