New Tech Scholarship Enters the Digital Information Sphere

The spring 2025 semester culminated in 68 graduate students entering 26 dissertations and 42 master’s-level works into Digital Commons @ Michigan Tech, MTU’s online repository for graduate-level research.

Digital Commons’ readership snapshot for May tallied 25,071 full-text downloads of all catalogued Tech works, and two brand-new publications topped the list at No. 1 and No. 3:

All of a sudden it’s July, and the end of the summer semester will be here before we know it. Graduate students can check their Degree Progress Checklist to make sure they are on track for completing on time.

Thank You for a Successful Upper Peninsula History Conference!

The Historical Society of Michigan (HSM) was in the Copper Country from June 27-29, and Michigan Tech welcomed conference sessions, tours and workshops for the 2025 Upper Peninsula History Conference, with events co-hosted and co-sponsored by the Michigan Tech Archives.

The conference was the result of many months of planning and collaboration across campus. Planning began last fall with an assembly of campus and community partners to select the content sessions, which were presented to a diverse statewide audience. Attendance was record-breaking!

Several Michigan Tech faculty and staff delivered content sessions:

  • Emily Riippa Schwiebert (Archives) — Keynote: “The Flagbearer: Big Annie and the 1913-1914 Copper Strike”
  • Sue Collins (HU) — Keynote: “Cinema on the World War I Home Front: Community Support in the Copper Country”
  • Bill Sproule (CEGE) — Session: “Houghton: Birthplace of Professional Hockey”
  • Lindsay Hiltunen (Archives) and Sarah Scarlett (SS) — Session: “From Mining to Modernity: Michigan Technological University”
  • Tim Scarlett (SS) — Session: “Ice Age to Industrial Age: 10,000 Years in the Copper Country”
  • Erika Vye (GLRC) — Session: “The Keweenaw’s Geoheritage: Land, Water, & People”
  • Sarah Scarlett (SS) — “Going ‘UP’ North: U.P. Tourism”

At the conference awards banquet, Sean Gohman ’18 (Ph.D. Industrial Heritage and Archaeology), executive director of the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission, accepted the coveted Superior Award on behalf of the Keweenaw Heritage Site Network. Established by HSM in 2006, the Superior Award recognizes historical societies, museums and other historical organizations that have preserved and advanced regional history. The Keweenaw Heritage Site Network consists of over 20 local historical agencies who all celebrate in this recognition, including the Michigan Tech Archives and the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum. It was a big weekend for local history and also a big weekend for Michigan Tech!

HSM and the Michigan Tech Archives would like to offer special thanks to Catering Services, the Memorial Union Building team, the Mineral Museum staff, the Rozsa Center staff, and those at Transportation Services who set up special parking. The weekend was successful and enjoyed by all!

Upcoming Retirement of the Internal Query Tool

Over the past two years, the Advancement and Alumni Engagement team has significantly enhanced our engagement with alumni, donors and friends. This success has been supported by our transition to CRM Advance, an Ellucian product that now serves as our primary data repository. To ensure our campus partners have access to the most current information, safeguard donor privacy and facilitate mutually beneficial relationship building, we are retiring outdated resources, including the Internal Query Tool.

What's Happening?
The Internal Query Tool (IQT) will be decommissioned on or around Monday, July 7. At that time, access to the IQT will be permanently removed.

Will You Be Affected?
Most IQT users have already transitioned away from the tool due to the adoption of CRM Advance and the implementation of the email-based TeamDynamics ticketing queue at adv-help@mtu.edu. IQT data have not received updates since July 1, 2023. We have worked to proactively provide advance notice and training to campus users as to alternative methods for data retrieval. The most common use of the IQT was to retrieve profile reports. These are now available by submitting a ticket.

For your convenience, a Frequently Asked Questions section has been added to our website, offering comprehensive guidance.

What Action is Required?
No action is required on your part. Access to the IQT will be automatically revoked on or around Monday, July 7.

Questions or Concerns?
The Advancement Services team is committed to supporting our collaborative efforts. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact us by sending an email to adv-help@mtu.edu.
