Military Alumni Share Personal Accounts During Appreciation Weekend

Military Service Appreciation Weekend, hosted by the Office of Alumni Engagement in recognition and celebration of the Michigan Tech community members who have served in the US armed forces, took place on campus May 2–3. 

As part of the weekend, alumni were invited to share personal stories from their time in uniform. Highlights from these conversations—along with links to the full profiles—are now available to read on the Alumni News Blog.

Join a Walking Group for the 2025 Parade of Nations

The 2025 Parade of Nations kicks off at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20, beginning at the J. R. Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library and ending at Dee Stadium in downtown Houghton. Community, student, fraternal and religious organizations are invited to walk in the parade and showcase the spirit of multiculturalism in the Keweenaw. Walking groups should arrive between 10–10:40 a.m. to line up for the parade. 

Register online by Sept. 9 for guaranteed consideration.

On the Road

A team of researchers from Michigan Tech recently participated in two conferences held June 8-11 in Glendale, Arizona: the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) International Conference on Transportation and Development, and the International Airfield and Highway Pavements Conference. 

Among the attendees were Zhanping You (CEGE) and Baron Colbert '13 (Ph.D. Civil Engineering). Ph.D. students Kwadwo Ampadu Boateng and Tamim Adnan showcased their work through poster presentations. Boateng presented a case study on Low-Volume Concrete and Thin Unbonded Concrete Overlay Projects in Michigan, while Adnan focused on Equitable Infrastructure Management. Ph.D. candidate Mohsen Naghdi also contributed a podium presentation on Remote Sightline Inspection at Highway-Rail Grade Crossings utilizing LiDAR data and geospatial analysis. 

Papers from the Michigan Tech researchers have also been accepted for publication in the conference proceeding.

New Funding

Tania Demonte Gonzalez (MAE/MARC) is the principal investigator on a project that has received a $76,243 research and development joint agreement with the University of Minnesota Duluth.

The project's title is "UMD - OSWEC Teamer."

Gordon Parker (MAE/MARC) is a Co-PI on this potential project.

Reminders

University Images Closing Saturday and Sunday

Due to essential repairs to the Student Development Complex's main water line, the SDC will be closed on Saturday, June 21, and Sunday, June 22. As a result, University Images will also be closed during this time.

The Campus Store will remain open with adjusted weekend hours:

  • Saturday, June 21, from 12-4 p.m.
  • Sunday, June 22, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

University Images will reopen at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 23, and we will resume regular summer hours at that time.

Brkfst & Co Closed on Summer Session Orientation Dates

Michigan Tech's Brkfst & Co campus dining location will be closed three days next week to accommodate the space and resources needs of MTU's on-campus Summer Session Orientation activities. Access to the Keweenaw Commons in the Memorial Union Building will also be limited during these dates.

Brkfst & Co will be closed:

  • Monday, June 23
  • Thursday, June 26
  • Friday, June 27

On-Campus Dining Alternatives
While Brkfst & Co is closed, alternative campus dining options include the Library Cafe/Velodrome Coffee Co. for grab-and-go meal options, snacks, drinks, and bakery; or The Eatery at McNair dining hall (credit card only). For a full list of menus and hours, visit Michigan Tech's Dine On Campus website.
