Michigan Tech Showcase Envisions a World Where Computing is Everywhere

C+X is the formula for this year’s annual Computing [MTU] Showcase at Michigan Tech, which focuses on the convergence of computing, everywhere and with everything.

The integration of computing into industry, research and society will be explored in the three-day showcase, happening from Wednesday to Friday, Oct. 2-4, on Michigan Tech’s campus. Sponsored by Tech’s Institute of Computing and Cybersystems (ICC) and the College of Computing, Showcase [C+X] features speakers, panels and exhibits from across the University and the country.

“The first showcase really focused on the past, present and future of computing at MTU,” said Dennis Livesay, Dave House Dean of the College of Computing. “Last year’s focus was on artificial intelligence. And this year’s event focuses on convergence, emphasized by the title C+X, which shows how we are focusing on the integration of computing — C — with a wide variety of other domains — X.”

Last year, 501 Huskies gave back at 60 unique service sites across the Keweenaw. We anticipate a similar number of volunteers for this year’s event, which will take place on Oct. 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Do you know of an organization, agency or community member who is in need of assistance? We can help! Request support yourself by completing our site registration form or pass it on to others who would benefit from having some Husky Helpers.

Past activities completed by our volunteers include organizing donations, chopping wood, cleaning storage facilities, fall lawn cleanup, trail maintenance and more.

Official Rollout of the Center for Artificial Intelligence

As part of the C+X Showcase, the official rollout of the Center for Artificial Intelligence will be next week on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m.

Join us as we usher in the evolved center with a talk from Director Vinh Nguyen (MAE), a showcase of AI research, and a panel on the convergence of computing featuring Institute of Computing and Cybersystems members. Food and drink will be available!

Get there early to hear visiting guest Jim Keller’s talk, titled “Von Neumann, Turning and ChatGPT.” Keller is a distinguished professor emeritus at the University of Missouri.

Provost Storer’s Open Office Hours

Provost Andrew Storer will be holding open office hours from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2, in the Library Cafe. Feel free to stop by; appointments are not required for open office hours.

Additional open office hours during the fall 2024 and spring 2025 semesters are scheduled for:

  • Tuesday, Dec. 3, from 11 a.m. to noon
  • Tuesday, Jan. 28, from 11 a.m. to noon
  • Wednesday, March 26, from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Weekly office hours continue to be held from 1:30-3:30 p.m. each Thursday during the 2024-25 academic year. Faculty, staff and students are welcome to schedule an appointment by emailing Amie Ledgerwood at asledger@mtu.edu.

Soccer Set for First GLIAC Road Weekend

The Michigan Tech soccer team takes to the road for the first time in league play this week.

The Huskies face Purdue Northwest tomorrow, Sept. 27, at 1 p.m. and first-year GLIAC affiliate Roosevelt on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m.

On the Road

Tim Havens (CS/GLRC/ICC), Evan Lucas (ICC/GLRC) and Chris Wright, Phil Wernette and Travis White (all GLRC) attended the Lakebed 2030 Conference, held from Sept. 17-19 in Traverse City, Michigan.

The 2024 conference was focused on the scientific, economic and environmental value associated with the high-resolution mapping of the Great Lakes.

Wernette and Wright gave a presentation on "Benthic Habitat Mapping: Integrating AUVs and ROVs with Photogrammetry and Machine Learning."

White presented on "Lake Superior Mapping and Archaeological Exploration Using Uncrewed Technology and High-Performance Multibeam." White and the Ocean Infinity team also demonstrated the capabilities of the Armada 8 autonomous surface vessel, mentioned recently in the news for its part in a mission to locate a plane lost over Lake Superior in 1968.

Cody Kangas (CServ) and Michigan Tech undergraduate student Klarissa Peters were quoted by The Daily Mining Gazette in a story about Michigan Tech’s fall Career Fair, which provided students with opportunities to connect with potential employers. Kangas was also quoted in a story by WLUC TV6.

Stephen Techtmann (BioSci) was quoted by The Cool Down in a story about his research, funded by DARPA, which explores the potential of turning plastic into food through plastic-devouring microbes. The research was also highlighted in MTU’s 2022 Research Magazine.

Hiltunen will give a presentation on Anna Klobucher Clemenc during a celebration event this Sunday, Sept. 29, at the Bonfire Restaurant in Houghton.

Michigan Tech’s Green Campus Enterprise was mentioned by The Daily Mining Gazette in a story about the City of Hancock Planning Commission’s latest updates. The team, part of MTU’s Enterprise Program, is leading a climate and adaptation project for the city that includes conducting a greenhouse gas inventory and researching mitigation options for potential risks, like flooding and infrastructure damage.

Request for Proposals: Century II Campaign Endowed Equipment Fund

Proposals are being requested for Michigan Tech's Century II Campaign Endowed Equipment Fund (C2E2) program, an internal award of the Vice President for Research Office.

The C2E2 program is aimed at providing funds to purchase equipment that will have a campuswide impact and improve the lives of faculty, staff and students.

Proposals are due no later than 4 p.m. on Oct. 10, and must be submitted electronically per the program guidelines. Late submissions will not be accepted.

Physics Colloquium/EPSSI Seminar with Steve Krueger

Steve Krueger, atmospheric sciences professor from the University of Utah, will present at this week's Physics Colloquium in conjunction with the EPSSI (Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences Institute). The seminar will be presented in person at 4 p.m. today, Sept. 26, in Fisher 139.

Krueger's presentation is titled "Open-Cell Convection in Marine Cold-Air Outbreaks with Snow."

Refreshments will be available starting at 3:30 p.m. (prior to the talk) in the Fisher Hall lobby.

MSE Seminar with Bernard Gaskey

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is hosting a seminar presented by Bernard Gaskey, Sigma Division, Los Alamos National Laboratory, at 1 p.m. today, Sept. 26, in M&M 610.

Gaskey will present "Thermodynamics at Interfaces: Evolving the Paradigm for Multi-Material Design and Manufacturing."

From the abstract:
Modern designs for aircraft engines, automotive structures, and powerplants increasingly rely on combinations of materials to achieve desired performance. Metal components require contributions to mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, and thermal stability from multiple alloys to be effective. Manufacturing multi-material parts remains a challenge because of crystallographic and property mismatches in the mixed-material region at the interface. Here, we use a combined computational and experimental approach to address the joining of vanadium to a variety of common engineering alloys. Applying the Thermo-Calc software suite, we identify composition pathways between the materials that maximize manufacturability while minimizing deleterious intermetallic phases. We combine these results with experiments using a variety of manufacturing techniques including diffusion bonding and electron beam and laser additive manufacturing. The feedback between closely coupled computational screening and experimental validation provides a much more efficient material development pathway than when the techniques are used individually.

Gaskey is a research engineer on the welding and joining team in the Sigma Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory, where his research interests include multimaterial additive manufacturing and phase behavior at interfaces. Before joining Los Alamos, he was a staff scientist at the University of Dayton Research Institute supporting metal additive manufacturing efforts at the Air Force Research Laboratory.

He received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University, and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in materials science in 2018. He was a research fellow in the mechanical and aerospace engineering department at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. His research has spanned dealloying, electrocatalysis and alternative energy, optical characterization, and mechanics of composite materials.

All vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free items on the buffet are labeled for easy identification. No takeout service or personal containers are permitted.

The buffet lunch is $15.50 per person. Cash, credit cards, and gift cards are accepted. Gift cards can be purchased in the Memorial Union office, room 101.

Haseung Chung wil present “Development of Scalable and Expeditious Additive Manufacturing (SEAM): A Solution to High Production Additive Manufacturing.”

Chung’s professional interests and recent research include developing new additive manufacturing processes, magnetic-field assisted finishing (MAF), optimizing additive manufacturing for biomedical applications and cyber manufacturing systems.

MICHIGAN TECH ART SERIES EVENT Douglas Degges is presenting two parallel artistic explorations in the Rozsa A-Space Gallery. Since the fall of 2019, Degges has been creating a series of intriguing abstract paintings based on cell phone photos from his family in Louisiana in a group text. This project explores shared visual experiences and affirms the concept of home as immaterial and held within oneself. Alongside these paintings are a series of abstract sculptures that Degges collaborated on with his wonderful canine companion, Cricket. How to Get Human Subjects Research Approval

The Human Research Protection Program is presenting a lunchtime information session to help people with Institutional Review Board submissions. IRB submissions are significantly different from grant proposals or academic papers. They have to focus mainly on the practical details of how participants will be found, recruited, and consented, and exactly what people will have to do as part of the project. In this lunchtime Zoom presentation, Mike Reay will talk for 30 minutes about what the IRB is looking for in a submission, and how to minimize the number of changes required before a project is approved. He will then field any questions people have about the process. The presentation will be recorded and posted on the HRPP website, and any departments or groups of researchers who would like to schedule a later in-person version are welcome to contact Mike to make arrangements.

University of Utah's Atmospheric Sciences Professor Steve Krueger will give a talk on Open-Cell Convection in Marine Cold-Air Outbreaks with Snow Dramatic cloud patterns are typically evident in satellite imagery of winter-time cold-air outbreaks over the Greenland and Norwegian Seas. The cellular cloud structure usually evolves from closed-cell to open-cell as the air masses traverse the open ocean. However, the open-cell structure is often obscured in satellite visible imagery by ice clouds formed by the convection. As a consequence, the typical sharp decrease in albedo associated with subtropical transitions to open cells may not occur (see graphic). A numerical simulation of this mixed-phase transition also exhibits oscillating cells, produced by what appears to be the same mechanism as those in subtropical open cell shallow cumulus fields with liquid-only microphysics. Such oscillating cells result from coupled convective cell life cycles that include the formation of cold pools…

Huskies Swim Training is a program that provides additional attention and competitive guidance to advanced swimmers looking to focus on stroke technique and efficiency. Sessions will be designed to improve swimming through stroke drills and swimming sets focused on endurance, speed, and race strategy.
