All VPR Departments Closing Tuesday Afternoon

All departments of the Vice President for Research Office (VPR) will be closed on Tuesday, June 25, from 1:30-4 p.m.

VPR staff will be attending a Retirement Social for Dave Reed in the Memorial Union Building Ballroom from 2-5 p.m. on Tuesday. Those needing assistance with a sponsored proposal or award, please plan accordingly.

Dave will be retiring on Sunday, June 30. We invite all who would like to say farewell to join us at the celebration of his illustrious career.

MS Defense: Cody McCarthy, Math

M.S. in Mathematical Sciences candidate Cody McCarthy will present a master's defense at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 24, in Fisher 328.

The title of McCarthy's defense is "New Method for Computing the Euclidean Condition Number with RIM-C."

McCarthy is advised by Jiguang Sun.

Professor Emerita Carol MacLennan (SS) and Emeritus Research Professor Charles Kerfoot (BioSci) appeared in a Great Lakes Now episode titled “Reef Rescue and Wild Edibles.” The episode’s segment on Buffalo Reef — a high-value fish spawning ground in Grand Traverse Bay threatened by millions of tons of mine tailings, aka stamp sands — summarized the threat to the reef and what’s been done so far, and explained the long-term multiphase plan of action decided on by the Buffalo Reef Task Force earlier this year.

WJMN Local 3 mentioned Michigan Tech in a story about a volunteer landscaping effort by the U.P. Football All-Stars and Habitat for Humanity in Marquette County. The All-Stars’ celebrity coaches, including former Husky basketball player Jake Witt, volunteered at the event as well and were quoted in the story.

Huskies Swim Training - Summer 2024 Session 1

Join us for a summer of swimming in Huskies Swim Training! This training program provides additional attention and competitive guidance to proficient swimmers ages 6-17 looking to improve their swimming skills and fitness levels. Our goal is to provide participants with a dynamic, 6-week-long training program. Two-week sessions are also available. Each two weeks has a stroke focus to help participants refine their skills and develop their speed. Participants must have swimming knowledge and ability equivalent to Level 6 of the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program or higher, demonstrate competency in all four competitive strokes, and be able to swim multiple lengths of the pool unassisted. Classes include a warm-up, skill work, and a workout. Space will be provided for personal items on the pool deck. Goggles are highly recommended. Showering is required before entering the water. Class size is limited. Session Focus - Freestyle/Backstroke June 17-27, 2024 Monday - Thursday, 3:30-5:00 pm
