This week, the Van Pelt and Opie Library and Campus Store welcomed the University community to celebrate textbook affordability with posts dedicated to Course Reserve and a collaborative project between the two units. In our continued efforts to put affordable course materials in the hands of all of our students, the library and Campus Store would like to emphasize three ways in which departments and instructors can further our mission to make a Michigan Tech education more affordable.

Please:

1. Be mindful of deadlines for course material adoptions. The sooner the Campus Store has a comprehensive list of materials, the better we can serve our students by partnering with the library to highlight what students already have access to. The deadline for fall 2024 adoptions is April 30.
2. Utilize Course Reserve. Instructors may bring a copy of their textbooks to the library in order to take advantage of this free service for their students. The Course Reserve Request form is available to facilitate the process.
3. Search the library’s catalog for your course materials and be sure to let the library and Campus Store know when you find them. These “accidental textbooks” can be put on Course Reserve so that they are more easily identified by students, and all students will be able to use them for free during the semester.

Please join the Rhetoric, Theory, and Culture (RTC) graduate program on Friday (Jan. 12) at noon in the Petersen Library (Walker 318) for a Brown Bag event presented by Timothy Kiernan (HU) and Vyas Shenoy.

The presentation is titled "Redesigning an Automotive Feature from Gasoline to Electric: A Use Experience Case Study."

Keirnan is a former interaction engineer at Ford Motor Company and a current assistant teaching professor at Michigan Tech.

Shenoy is a core feature owner with Ford Product Development.

From the abstract:
Join us for a case study of engineering and user experience design from the automotive industry. Tim and Vyas will describe how they designed the human-machine interface (HMI) for Ford's award-winning Pro Power Onboard feature that provides home-sized levels of power in electrical outlets on Ford trucks and vans.

This case study will reveal:
• When to break with user interface consistency in a product and why,
• User research we conducted to guide our early design concept,
• Paper prototypes we created to support our usability testing of the concept with vehicle owners, and
• How we navigated internal debate over changes that we designed to make the electric F150's Pro Power Onboard even better.

Michigan Tech hockey is traveling to St. Thomas for a CCHA road series.

The puck drops at 8:07 p.m. EST tomorrow (Jan. 11) and 6:07 p.m. EST Saturday (Jan. 13) at the St. Thomas Ice Arena.

The Huskies are 9-8-4 overall and 6-4-0 in the CCHA. The Tommies are 9-10-1 overall and 7-5 in the CCHA.

Sangyoon Han (BioMed) was quoted by The Scientist in a story about a recent study reporting the promotion of cellular adhesion by the adaptor protein Cas.

The 307th Bomb Wing of the U.S. Air Force mentioned Michigan Tech in a story about three new squadron commanders, including Maj. Timothy Pach ’06 (B.S. Civil Engineering), who took command of the 307th Civil Engineer unit. Pach earned his commission through Michigan Tech’s Air Force ROTC program.

Candlelight Vigil for Kenny Bragg

The Huskies Pep Band invites all members of the Husky community to join us in holding a candlelight vigil for Kenny Bragg at 7 p.m. tonight (Jan. 10) at the Husky Statue.

Kenny was killed Dec. 30 in a house explosion in Whitmore Lake, Michigan. He was a proud member and tenor saxophone section leader of the Pep Band, and was set to graduate in April with his degree in anthropology.

C3 is back! Join Carved and Crafted Catering for this week's C3 Luncheon, held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Alumni Lounge (MUB 107). All faculty and staff, along with their guests, are invited.

The C3 lunch buffet menus are created and prepared by Chef Luis Delgado and his culinary team. As the name suggests, the meals are meant to foster conversation, community and collegiality. Attendees may bring their lunch instead of purchasing the buffet. Fruit-infused water, coffee, tea and cookies are available free to all attendees.

The buffet lunch is $15 per person. Cash, credit cards and gift cards are accepted. Gift cards can be purchased or redeemed in the Memorial Union Office (MUB 101).

We will be incorporating new food icons moving forward. Please follow the guide listed below and you will see these included into our menus and used in dining facilities across campus.

Library Orientation for New Students

The Van Pelt and Opie library is here to help you succeed! At this event, librarians will share tips and tricks for getting the most out of the library's electronic and physical resources. After that, we'll tour the library so you can find your favorite study room, check out a GoPro, take a peek at the 3D printers, and learn where to get research help once the semester has started. This event will take place in the library's East Reading Room. Enter the library through the main doors and walk straight ahead. Walk all the way down the central area; the East Reading Room will be to your left and signs will highlight the event. Here, you'll have the chance not only to delve into the intriguing world of cider-making but also to reconnect with your fellow Michigan Tech alumni. Snacks will be provided, and you can quench your thirst with a variety of beverages, including non-alcoholic options, available for individual purchase. Scion Cider Co. is located at 916 Jefferson St W, Salt Lake City, UT 84101. This event is restricted to individuals aged 21 and above. A valid ID is required for entry. Middle School Volleyball Development League

January 10, all day | Student Development Complex (SDC), Multi-Purpose Gym

A four-week developmental program for middle school girls in grades 7 & 8 to learn and improve their skills in preparation for the upcoming interscholastic season. This program is designed to maximize exposure to the sport by providing high-quality training and guaranteed playing time without the time commitment, cost, and travel required of more competitive club teams. Athletes will develop basic to intermediate volleyball skills, strategy, and rules of volleyball to help prepare them for future competitive teams.
