Huskies Meet Huskies

I’ve had three instances of Husky Encounters.

First. I was a fighter pilot in Vietnam flying A-37s and met a couple of other pilots whose names I recognized but didn’t know me (Ron Rusing and Dave Vesely). I also came across Gordie Tushek in Thailand. I was his RA in Wadsworth and he was flying F-4s.

Second. A tech grad – another fighter pilot whose name escapes me – dated my ex-wife for a short time.

Third. I played adult league hockey in Charleston, South Carolina. I ran into one of my teammates at a Tech alumni gathering. Neither of us knew the other was from Tech. He graduated about 25 years after me.

- Hi Mike. Thank you for your service and for sharing these memories. Huskies share a bond that certainly crosses borders. -SB

Hi Scott,

I always enjoy the Tech Alum and trying to keep up with what’s going on UP there. Haven’t been on campus since 1996 to visit. It was a HOT summer. Just wondering about the progress of the 3-D image of the Husky statue and pavers at Husky Plaza or whatever it’s called these days. I got a thank-you from Paula Nutini ’85 back after donations that said there was something in the works so we could see our pavers on the web. Did that ever happen? Guess I might have to just get up there for an eyeball anyways. Keep up the good work.

Herb, good timing on this as we have a team working it right now. Photos of each brick were taken and are being assembled into a searchable database for the website. We will let everyone know when it is ready to go.

BUT… we encourage you to make a trip here and see it for yourself. You’ll have to hurry if you want to see it before it is all covered with snow!

Sad to say that Aubrey W. Gibson, Associate Professor Emeritus Mechanical Engineering, died in Houghton, October 5 at the age of 97.

Aubrey was a legend with ME-EM alums from the 1950′s and 60′s. He was well known for conducting a test to help students understand momentum exchange by shooting different caliber guns into birch logs.

Do you have a memory to share of Dr. Gibson? Send it to techalum@mtu.edu and we will include these in a future issue.
