Old Memorial Union

Oh, guess I’m getting old too, but I think they went to the 1st floor lounge which could also be accessed from College Ave by a short flight up. In this pic, the ground floor is the cafeteria where I took my meals while living in the “New Dorm”, now Wads, which had no food service in ’55.

The stairs led to a patio on the south side of the Memorial union Building that to the best of my recollection was never used.

The wing that went southward —- ground level was the kitchen for the cafeteria. I worked in that kitchen Sept.56 through May 57 — good education for a naive local yokel. Wadsworth Hall students ate in the cafeteria in the Union. Cooks were Harry Schalf and his wife Agnes.
Baker was Eino Kemppainen.

Stairs went to a walkway on side of the MUB south side.
Ground level had a cafeteria seating. Stairs weren’t use much as I recall—didn’t join on to any paths—and when snow fell there was no cleared path
that I remember.

Hi Dennis, These stairs were one of the early stairs to no where. They led up to a sort of patio that was never used. The row of windows that you see there were the Weed Room (No, not that kind Of weed) and the student lounge. I think that there was a door from the student lounge out to this patio.

As I recall the stairs went to the terrace area. The windows shown there are from the lounge where the commuters studied or sometimes had a short nap. I believe the room t the far left was known as The Weed room.

Again fter 53 years I may be mistaken. I do know that the windows to wing at the far right we’re where we held the Union Board meetings when I served 58-60.
