Mystery Entertainer Identified?

Jim Croce

Hi Dennis,
Concerning the (Music On and Off Campus blog), mystery solved. The entertainer described was Jim Croce, who entertained at Tech along with his wife Ingrid in, perhaps 1971 as ‘The Croces’. I still remember the all nighter in Freda…………

YITBOS,
Rick Beers

Rick: I want to know about the all nighter and YITBOS.

Dennis,
Sure looks like JohnDenver.

Frank Gibes

Frank: I confused this issue by using Denver’s photo, part of the original thread on concerts.

Dear Dennis,
Regarding Ted Egan’s picture of an unknown singer who performed at Tech in 1968: while he bears a striking resemblance to John Denver, at that time Denver had just come out of the (Chad) Mitchell Trio and was looking to establish himself as a soloist. While he may have known the songs you mentioned, his style was somewhat different; and I would think he would play more of his own compositions.

The impressive repertoire of Ian and Sylvia and Joni Mitchell songs suggest strongly that he is David Rea, who recorded and performed extensively with Ian and Sylvia, Gordon Lightfoot, and Joni Mitchell. Rea actually became acquainted with Ian and Sylvia while he was still in high school, and by 1968 he would have been about the age of the guitarist you picture. He went on to record with several other well-known artists over that and the following decades. He died in 2011.

Neil: That was actually my photo from the previous issue that confused many. That is John Denver, not our mystery guy. Sorry.
