Cellar Mystery

Hi Dennis,
We enjoy the stories from your email column.

Anybody out there remember back in 1968 an underground bar and entertainment place called “The Cellar?” It was located under the JC Penny store or there abouts.

We visited it several times. A young man, Ted Hillfinger, our age was singing some great songs. He had a powerful voice. One song he did so well was “Until It’s For You To Go,” made famous by Buffy Saint-Marie.

And another email:

I am sure The Cellar was a few blocks before the Ambassador on the theater block. A woman from Canada had owned The Cellar. It was back in the days when Tony owned the bar before the bridge and next to the Ambassador. The Ambassador, our favorite place to visit for a brew and meal. Every time we visit da Tech, the Ambassador is in our plans to stop in.

Our next visit is June 23rd. I plan on walking in downtown to recall where The Cellar was. Brings back memories. I’ll stop in to visit you, time permitting.

Bob: I seem to recall a place in the alley next to the Library Bar. Or at least hearing about it. Maybe other alums can place the Cellar.
