Cup memories and alums meet in Africa

MacNaughton in Arena 135

I believe that Bruce Abbey is holding the Cup with coach and he was a roommate of mine at the “Half House” in 74/75.  Fantastic memory of an era of hockey excellence at Tech.

- Thanks for checking in Gary! -SB

I was at Tech in ’76 when we last won the Cup. I then followed the team out to Colorado for the NCAAs, which we unfortunately lost to Minnesota. Back in the mid 70s there was a pattern with Minnesota. One of us would win the WCHA. The other team would take second. Then the positions would reverse in the NCAA tourney.

My youngest son is going to Tech now. Hopefully Tech doesn’t wait for the next of our bloodline to enroll before they next win the Cup!

Congrats Youse Guys!

- Thank you, Michael. I don’t think we’ll have to wait that long! -SB

Hello

Curious why it is called the Final Five?? There are only 4 teams playing??

Steve Madison
Da Tech 81

- Good question, Steve. I asked one of the hockey gurus in our department, Mark Wilcox, and apparently five teams used to compete in the tournament. The 4/5 seeds would play, and that winner would take on the 1 seed. Now only four teams make the tournament, but like the Big 10, the name lives on. -SB

Hello,

I recently ran into a Michigan Tech Alum far afield and thought I would share the story.

I graduated from MTU in December 2015 with my degree in mechanical engineering and a commission from Army ROTC. This January I took a graduation trip to Liberia, West Africa because of connections my family has there.

In Liberia, I traveled 5 hours into the countryside to a mission compound in Saclepea, I was told the pastor of the compound, John Nuneah Bleah, had been educated in the U.S. so I was interested to meet him. One morning we shared breakfast and, before I even had time to ask about his education, he mentioned that his Alma Mater still sent letters to him in Liberia. These letters came from Houghton! I was incredibly surprised to run into a MTU alumnus so soon after graduating and so far away from Michigan.

Of course, we swapped stories and shared our experiences in the Upper Peninsula. Soon we realized that even though he graduated in 1977 and I in 2015 we had much in common. We had both been involved in Campus Crusade, or Cru as it is now called, went to the same church, Evangel Baptist, and even knew some of the same people.

John still had his MTU hat and I had a shirt from Make-a-Difference day.

Sincerely,

- Hi Luke. Thanks for sending this. Great story, and it’s amazing what a small world it actually is. -SB
