Term of Endearment

The son of a friend recently finished his graduate work  and we  were talking of the many great times we each had while at Tech.

I mentioned something about TOOTS and he was completely unaware, that during our time there, the local folks called the student body TOOTS. The reference, of course, was to the future engineers being educated there. I believe ALL Tech students were TOOTS.

When did this “honor” by the local folks fade away? I be interested to find out why and when.

Thanks,
Bob Piersma CE ’66.

Great question, Bob. In my time as a graduate student here, I actually never heard that term. In fact, the only place I’ve heard it since has been in references around this department, and never in the community. Maybe I lead a sheltered existence. Anyone out there have any memories of this word?
