Following Up on Hungarian Falls

Hi Kevin,

I saw in this issue of the TechAlum newsletter a piece from Tim GeBott about the pond at Hungarian Falls.  I work with the Keweenaw Land Trust and in 2013 we purchased the top 10 acres of the Hungarian Falls gorge, which included the uppermost falls, the historic dam, and an impounded pond.  Previously it was by the Torch Lake Area Fire Protection Authority, who no longer needed it after most of the communities in the partnership upgraded their fire systems.  KLT held a brief but very successful public fundraising campaign to purchase this special place, raising over $50,000 towards the project.  Today it’s still open to the public and we’ve been working hard to slowly improve the site for visitors to enjoy.  The lower falls along the gorge are located within Michigan DNR lands, who we have partnered with to clean up trash on several occasions – not to mention improve attitudes towards the land so there is less to clean up in the future.  We’re planning to install better wayfaring signage along the gorge to help people navigate the multitude of trails so local residents, Tech students, and Keweenaw visitors can enjoy this scenic location!  Folks can learn more at http://keweenawlandtrust.org/special-hungarian-falls.php.

Thanks, Nathan! A far better summary than I could have produced.
