South American

South American

Dennis -
I spent a summer term at Tech in 1963. I don’t think I ever had as much fun in the Copper Country as I did that summer. But I distinctly recall going down to the Cohodas-Paoli dock every Tuesday at 5:30 when the SOUTH American came in. They had about a two hour layover to allow the passengers to depart the ship and do some shopping in the nearby shops or to have a beverage at the Board of Trade (or was it the Board and Trade – I forget).

There was a “no hold barred” policy, if that’s what you wanted to call it, at the KD house that summer. The Fire Marshall had condemned the place and we knew it was going to be vacated at the end of the term and probably demolished. Maintenance was at a minimum and it was pretty well trashed by the end of summer. But I loved living there and had a great time while it lasted. The brick apartment building now sits where the house once was.

One last thought. Our next door neighbors to the west (towards downtown) were Beth and Bob Patterson. As I recall, he was the head librarian at Tech during that period. They never complained about all the crazy shenanigans that went on at the KD house during the years that I lived there. I have always been in their debt as they were good neighbors. They still live in their house at that location and I see Bob often walking his dog.
