Thank you, Dr. Smith. I appreciate that! -SB

Scott,

The picture of freshmen praying reminded me of the kindness shown us by the upperclassmen in Wadsworth Hall’s Artic Attic. As most of us incoming freshmen were not experienced drinkers, a few upperclassmen provided us an opportunity to learn the ropes; but in a very controlled and safe environment. They procured a few cases of quart bottles of Bosch beer and marched us up the hill to a secluded spot in the cemetery.

We sat around the tombstones downing our allocated 2 quarts each as the upperclassmen regaled us with stories about the social and educational adventure we were about to undertake. A few widely familiar songs were sung, among them “Jesus Loves Me.” I guess the stories brought home an awareness that Divine support would be useful to us as we started our pilgrimage at Tech.

After we finished the beer, we staggered back to the dorm carefully herded by the upperclassmen. Some frosh were sick, and all had a shower and were put safely to bed. I wasn’t aware of any other groups holding such an orientation, but seeing the picture in the August newsletter leads me to conclude the practice was more widespread than I thought.
