Mining Memories at Michigan Tech

I am so glad the #2 Calumet and Hecla engine house is open to the public. The summer before I came to Tech in 1952, I checked out that building. Whoever installed the lock on the engine house door made a mistake! The flap for the lock was screwed to the outside of the door frame. My friend Phil Tonne and I got a screw driver and unscrewed the flap and opened the door. We were awestruck by the biggest mine engine in the world. We admired it and closed the door and reattached the flap.
