Michigan Technological University is committed to the safe delivery of our 2021 Summer Youth Programs (SYP) in adherence with all known and applicable risk mitigation practices related to the SARS-COV-2 (“COVID-19”) pandemic. Our institutional response to COVID-19 is led and advised by a team of experts with the necessary skills and professional resources to plan, implement, and adjust guidance as the situation requires.
We are currently drafting our COVID-19 preparedness plan for 2022 and will share this once it is ready. This plan is subject to a change as new information becomes available, serves to outline our policies and procedures for prioritizing the health and safety of our participants, their families, and our campus during SYP.
Frequently Asked Questions
1
We have established protocols for SYP operation under five COVID-19 scenarios (Level 1-5). These are outlined in our Health and Safety Plan.
2
Michigan Tech Summer Youth Programs encourages, but no longer requires, the use of
face coverings for participants, staff, instructors, or faculty regardless of vaccination
status. However, we acknowledge that there are many reasons why a participant, staff,
instructor, or faculty member may choose to wear a face covering and welcome those
who wish to continue wearing them to do so. SYP asks that all individuals respect
the individual choice of others. Face coverings may still be required in accordance
with the regulations and policies of our partners for some courses, in which case
disposable face coverings will be provided if necessary.
3
SYP highly encourages, but does not require, that participants, staff, or instructors receive COVID-19 vaccination prior to participation in SYP. Because the CDC has differing guidance in a situation of potential exposure to COVID-19 for individuals who have been fully vaccinated, parents/guardians are encouraged to complete the Health History information in CampDoc regarding their participant’s vaccination status.
4
Check-in for SYP will take place mostly as a curbside service this year. You can sign up for a check-in slot using CampDoc. While we encourage parents/guardians to send off their participants in the parking lot, we understand that in some instances this may not be feasible. Those parents wishing to enter the residence hall to assist their student in moving out of their room may do so, but will be directed to park on the backside of Wadsworth Hall to keep the check-in lot clear. SYP staff will also be available to assist participants in moving luggage into their rooms.
5
During their time at Summer Youth Programs, students will be housed in Wadsworth Hall (Wads). Housing will be double occupancy. Participants may make a roommate request but we require both participants to request each other in order for the request to be considered.
In double occupancy rooming situations, beds are arranged on opposite sides of the room. A limited number of fans are available to rent on a first come first serve basis from SYP and participants are encouraged to bring their own.
Single occupancy rooming requests will only be considered in special circumstances and may be discussed with SYP staff in advance of participation.
6
Historically SYP has had a special check-out/in process for students wishing to leave campus during the course of the program for any reason (doctor appointments, lunch with a parental/guardian-approved individual, etc.). Because every minute of SYP is action packed we strongly encourage students to remain on campus throughout the program. Requests can be made by contacting our office at 906-487-2219, 1-888-PRECOLLEGE, or emailing us at syp@mtu.edu with “SYP Special Check-Out Request” in the subject line.
7
SYP check-out will be in Wadsworth Hall with staggered pick up times. You may choose your preferred pickup time in CampDoc. Our check-out window will be Fridays from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
8
The SYP Charter Bus will be running again this summer with stops in Novi, Bay City, Lansing, and Gaylord! To add the charter bus service for your student please email us at syp@mtu.edu including your student full name, if you are requesting a one way or round trip bus seat, and from what bus stop.
