Surround Sound Music Festival is a festival that celebrates contemporary representation in the arts and encourages participants to listen differently through cultural diversity. Mary Jennings and Libby Meyer, through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, selected the artists for the festival. The festival will take place at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Michigan Technological University April 3-4, 2020. Audiopharmacy, a Native American indie rock band from the Bay Area will be in residence and work with Native American students in workshops in Baraga as well as MTU about the challenges and opportunities for Native American Artists. Audiopharmacy will perform a concert on Friday evening.

Evelyn Glennie , a virtuoso percussionist who has been deaf since the age of twelve will be our keynote speaker on Saturday. Her talk and presentation will be similar to her TED talk about the challenges and opportunities for hearing impaired people in a hearing world and how she has overcome these challenges to become a world class musician. An audience Q&A will follow. Ms. Glennie’s talk will be followed by an internationally themed community meal.

Vieux Farka Touré, a traditional guitarist and singer originally from Mali will present a concert and work with MTU jazz and sound students and present a workshop for community members and students.
