Dr. Joe Cooper is currently the interim Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students. With nearly 15 years of experience in both student affairs and enrollment management areas, Joe has demonstrated his commitment and passion for supporting students’ access and success in higher education. Joe provides leadership for programs and initiatives in the areas of housing and residence education; career services; student leadership, organizations, and fraternity/sorority life; counseling and wellness services; diversity and inclusion; international programs; student information systems; and other student success initiatives through the Waino Wahtera Center for Student Success, including disability services, academic coaching, and student success courses.

Joe is actively involved in ACPA - College Student Educators International, and currently serves as Secretary of the ACPA Foundation Executive Board. Title IX and emergency management are additional areas that Joe is highly skilled in, and he has served as a Title IX deputy coordinator and investigator, and also as one of Michigan Tech’s emergency operations center directors. 

Joe holds a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Northern Michigan University. To further his passion for helping students pursue their education, Joe went on to successfully earn a Master of Education degree in student affairs administration from South Dakota State University and a Doctor of Education degree in educational leadership from Edgewood College.
