Spring Commencement ceremonies will be held Saturday, April 30 at Michigan Technological University. This year the University will confer 774 undergraduate and 203 graduate degrees. 

The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. in the John J. MacInnes Student Ice Arena in the Student Development Complex. 

Carrie Hessler-Radelet, director of the Peace Corps will deliver the Commencement address. Hessler-Radelet was sworn in as the 19th Director of the Peace Corps on June, 25 2014. She had previously served as the agency’s acting director and deputy director from 2010 to 2014. A member of a four-generation Peace Corps family, Hesseler-Radelet began her career in international development as a Peace Corps volunteer in Western Samoa, teaching secondary school with her husband Steve in the early 1980s. She has spent more than two decades working in public health, focusing on HIV/AIDS and maternal and child health.

Michigan Tech has had a strong relationship with the Peace Corps, offering Peace Corps Master’s International (PCMI) programs in 10 departments. For more than a decade, Tech has ranked as the number one university nationwide in the number of PCMI students serving as Peace Corps volunteers.

This year’s student speaker is Drew Markel, a Rochester, Michigan native graduating with a double major in biomedical and mechanical engineering. This summer, Markel will join the Kimberly-Clark Corporation to work in family care products.

ROTC Commissioning

Prior to Commencement, the official ROTC commissioning ceremony will take place at 7:30 a.m. in the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. Presiding over the ceremony will be Major General Peggy Combs, Commanding General of the US Army Cadet Command and Fort Knox, Kentucky. General Combs was commissioned a Regular Army second lieutenant in the Army Chemical Corps following graduation from the ROTC program at Syracuse University. In May she will be reassigned from her current position at Fort Knox to Chief of Staff, US Northern Command, Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado. Combs will also preside over the public commissioning during Commencement.

Following the ceremony, a reception for the new graduates, their families, friends and community will be held in the SDC multi-purpose gym.
