Tech’s College of Engineering and Department of Materials Science & Engineering also ranked well. MSE placed in the top one-third at 273rd and engineering overall was 356th of the 1,000 universities ranked.

As a whole, Michigan Tech ranked 676th out of the top 1,000 research universities worldwide, tied with Chongqing University in China and the University of Sofia in Bulgaria.

“Just being counted among the top 1,000 research universities in the world is a welcome affirmation of our commitment to international collaboration,” said President Glenn Mroz.  “It reflects our vision that Michigan Tech will lead as a global technological university that inspires students, advances knowledge and innovates to create a sustainable, just and prosperous world.”

Research Reputation

Data that US News evaluated in compiling its global rankings included global and regional research reputation, publications, books, conferences, citation impact, total citations, number of publications in the 10 percent most cited, international collaboration, number of papers among the top 1 percent most cited and percentage of papers among the top 1 percent most cited.

The rankings emphasize academic research, one reason that US universities topped the charts in numbers of ranked institutions and in the 22 subject areas evaluated, said Robert Morse, chief data strategist at US News.  Coming in second with the most universities ranked was China, followed by the United Kingdom, Germany and France.

Harvard University ranked number one, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.
