Jay Meldrum Named to SAE Board

Jay Meldrum has been elected to the Board of Directors of SAE International.

Formerly the Society of Automotive Engineers, SAE International is a global association of more than 138,000 engineers and related technical experts in the automotive, aerospace and commercial-vehicle industries.

Meldrum is executive director of the Keweenaw Research Center (KRC) and the Advanced Technology Development Complex (ATDC) at Michigan Technological University. He came to the University in 1997 and directs the 30-plus engineering professionals at KRC, which contracts with the US Army to study large-vehicle mobility technologies.

He directs Michigan Tech Enterprise SmartZone activities at the ATDC and advises companies looking to commercialize technologies developed at Michigan Tech. He also manages alternative energy research projects at KRC.

Meldrum has been involved in SAE for decades. Among his contributions, he is the lead organizer of the SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge, which Michigan Tech has hosted since 2003. He was a lead organizer for two SAE Small Engines Technology Conferences, in Malaysia and Austria, and is a member of the SAE University Programs Committee, with the charge of making the collegiate competitions more eco-friendly.

In addition, he is a member of the SAE Noise and Vibration Conference Organizing Committee and is also on the SAE Membership Board. Meldrum is a past member of the SAE Engineering Education Board.

Meldrum earned BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the General Motors Institute and the University of Michigan-Dearborn, respectively. Before coming to Michigan Tech, he was a director with EG&G Structural Kinematics, in Troy, focusing on signal processing and directing a test lab for General Motors.

Meldrum’s three-year term on the SAE Board of Directors expires in 2016.
