FAQ

What should I do if I plan to graduate at the end of the Fall 2015 semester?
If you plan to graduate at the end of the Fall 2015 semester, your housing contract will allow you to be released without additional penalties as long as you follow a few guidelines.  You will get an email in November to ask you if you will be graduating, going on coop, accepting an internship, going on study abroad, transferring, or withdrawing.  If this will be your situation, you will be able to fill out a form online by November 20.  You will then receive a confirmation email.  Housing will verify your reason for departure.  You will move out on December 20.  As long as you follow these guidelines and the additional instructions you will receive, you will be released from your contract.

What if I am not sure if I will graduate or not?   What if I am not sure when I will graduate?
Only you can determine your departure date.  Please talk to your academic advisor, your dissertation chair, or thesis chair to help you determine a timeline for completing your academic work. To assist you, Housing has a process that will allow you to leave at the end of the fall semester.  If you wish to leave at any time except at the end of your contract or at the end of the fall semester, you must request a contract release.  You can get a contract release form from Housing, 153 Wadsworth Hall. Please remember that a housing contract is a legally binding document.  You should only sign the contract if you are certain that you wish to live on-campus.

I applied to graduate school at Michigan Tech.  I am not sure if I will be accepted.  I want to stay in Daniell Heights.  What do I do?
If you are a current contract holder that has already applied to graduate school and you know you want to continue to live in Daniell Heights, you should renew your housing contract.  If you are notified that you are not admitted to graduate school, you will need to come to Housing, 153 Wadsworth Hall within 5 days of your notification that you are not admitted, to make arrangements for your departure.  You will not be penalized for breaking your contract if you are not admitted to graduate school as long as you come to Housing in person as soon as you are aware that you are not admitted.

What if I want to change apartments?
If you are certain that you wish to live in Daniell Heights, but you would like to transfer to a different apartment, we will try to accommodate individual requests.  You should renew your current contract for your exact same apartment online March 2-6.  You should then come to Housing in person between March 16-27. A schedule time slot will be available to select during the renewal process. We will take requests from contract holders who are in a 1 bedroom and want 2 bedrooms, in 2 bedrooms and want 1 bedroom, live upstairs and want downstairs, etc.  We will try to honor requests on a first-come, first-serve basis.  We will honor requests based on availability.  There is a $150 fee for transferring apartments. Apartment transfer moves must occur between July 17 and July 20.

When does the rate increase start?
The Board of Control voted to approve a rate increase in Daniell Heights for 2015-2016.  This rate increase goes into effect on July 1, 2015.

I want to renew my contract for next year, but I will not be here for the summer months.  Do I still pay rent in the summer?
If you renew your housing contract for the full year, you are responsible for rent in the summer months also.  These charges will be added to your online student account.  Rent will continue to be due on the first day of each month.

What happens if I forget to renew my housing contract?
If you do not renew your housing contract March 2-6, we will offer the apartment to a new contract holder by looking at the current waiting list.  You will not be able to renew your housing contract later in the semester if you change your mind. You will be required to move out on June 30, 2015, by 5:00PM when the current contract expires.

What if I do not renew the contract, and my co-tenant wants to take over the apartment?
If you have a co-tenant takeover after the contract renewal time (March 2-6) has passed, the co-tenant can have the apartment until the current contract expires on June 30, 2015.  The co-tenant will not be able to extend the current contract unless the take over paperwork is completed by March 27.  If you do not renew during the contract renewal time (March 2-6) online, we will offer the apartment to a new contract holder on the waiting list.

My friend wants my apartment next year.  Can I give my apartment to my friend?
No. We will make offers to students based on their position on the wait list.

I renewed my contract.  My co-tenant wants to take over the apartment.  Is this OK?
If the apartment and the co-tenant meet the eligibility requirements for a co-tenant take over, the co-tenant may take over the apartment.  The co-tenant will assume the current contract and the contract for next year that you already renewed.  Please come to 153 Wadsworth Hall in person for assistance.

When is rent due?
Rent is always due on the first day of each month.  If it is not paid in full on the fifth day of the month, a $50 late fee will be charged.  Please plan to pay your rent on the first day of each month.

I am graduating at the end of the Spring 2015 semester. My co-tenant wants to take over the apartment. What should we do?
Please come to Housing to see if the apartment is eligible for a co-tenant takeover and if the co-tenant is eligible to be a contract holder. If you are the original contract holder and you did not get the apartment as a co-tenant take over yourself, the apartment is eligible for a takeover. The apartment must also pass a physical inspection before any takeover is approved. The co-tenant must be a registered co-tenant for four (4) consecutive months in your apartment. The co-tenant must be a full-time Michigan Tech student who is at least twenty-one (21), married, with a dependent child, or a student with ninety (90) credit hours completed. If both the apartment and the co-tenant meet eligibility requirements, the current contract holder that will graduate can renew the current contract. Then, the current contract holder and the co-tenant may come to Housing to start the co-tenant take over process. The current contract holder should start the co-tenant takeover any time between now and the end of the Spring 2015 semester.
