Michigan Tech Hockey Head Coach, Joe Shawhan

Greetings from the MacInnes Student Ice Arena where we are gearing up for the 99th year of Michigan Tech Hockey. When the puck drops here on October 11-12, the team will be primed and ready to improve on last season’s record of 14-20-4. We are highly motivated to have a great season as a precursor to the 100th anniversary of Michigan Tech Hockey.

Looking forward, we have a solid group of upperclassmen on the team. We are particularly strong at goal, where senior Matt Jurusik and junior Robbie Beydoun are returning and will compete for a starting spot along with freshman Blake Pietila. Defense should be a stalwart, led by co-captain Seamus Donohue along with senior Keegan Ford and several juniors. I am confident in the development of the defensive side of the puck as they will be mature and focused this year. Of course, hockey teams win when they score goals. This year’s captain, Ray Brice, and his line will provide invaluable leadership on and off the ice. Our plan is to get to the net early and score goals. I am particularly excited to have 10 talented, local or legacy student-athletes on our roster or committed to join our program in the future. These include sons, grandsons or siblings of Michigan Tech alumni.

Our team has some great opportunities this year to play in front of large groups of alumni. The GLI (Dec. 30-31) will be played at Little Caesars Arena – if you haven’t yet had the chance to watch hockey there, consider joining us. It’s one of the best hockey venues in the country. We will head west immediately from the GLI to Phoenix for a weekend series with Arizona State (Jan. 4-5). I understand several Hockey Husky Alumni are planning to attend the games and have an unofficial reunion. As usual, our last series of the season will be a home and away with Northern Michigan (Feb. 28-29).

Michigan Tech hockey has an incredibly rich legacy that began nearly 100 year ago. We have decades of leadership from hockey alumni who recommend prospects, encourage players to consider Tech, and support their time on our team. The most important measure of our success is the long history of generous support from alumni who have positioned our program for continued growth and success.  While we will have numerous celebrations next year, our goal is to have an exceptional season this year to give you all the more reason to be proud of your hockey connections and your alma mater. Join us this year and certainly plan to help us celebrate next.

As always, come to a road game or stop in to see us in Houghton. I promise the MacInnes Student Ice Arena will be rocking.

Yours for Michigan Tech Hockey,

Joe Shawhan, Head Coach
