Objectives, Outcomes, and Criteria

Electrical Engineering Technology is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org, under the General Criteria and the Electrical/Electronics(s) Engineering Technology and Similarly Named Programs Program Criteria.

Program Educational Objectives

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) describe the attributes that we aspire for our graduates to possess three to five years after graduation. The BS in Electrical Engineering Technology degree program will prepare graduates with the technical and managerial skills necessary to enter careers in the design, application, installation, manufacturing, operation, and maintenance of electrical and electronic(s) systems.

  • PEO1: Graduates of the program will be well prepared for their first
    position in their field of study.

  • PEO2: Graduates of the program will be successfully employed in a degree-related job or pursuing an additional degree.

  • PEO3: Employers will be satisfied with the performance of the program
    graduates’ skills including: professional ethics and effective teamwork
    and communication in a global professional environment.

  • PEO4: Graduates of the program will be satisfied with their education
    and show the ability to continuously improve their skills and
    professionally adapt to changes in the field.

Student Outcomes

Student Outcomes (SO) capture the desired attributes we try to impart to our students through the curriculum and academic experience.

  • SO1 An ability to apply knowledge, techniques, skills and modern tools of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to solve broadly-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline.

  • SO2 An ability to design systems, components, or processes meeting specified needs for broadly-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline.

  • SO3 An ability to apply written, oral, and graphical communication in broadly-defined technical and non-technical environments; and an ability to identify and use appropriate technical literature.

  • SO4 An ability to conduct standard tests, measurements, and experiments and to analyze and interpret the results to improve processes.

  • SO5 An ability to function effectively as a member or leader on a technical team.

Program Criteria

The ABET program criteria for baccalaureate level programs in Electrical Engineering Technology state that the curriculum must enable the program to prepare graduates with skills necessary to enter careers in the design, application, installation, manufacturing, operation and/or maintenance of electrical/electronic(s) systems. The curriculum must enable the program to prepare graduates to have competence in five curricular areas, as follows:

(a) the application of circuit analysis and design, computer programming, associated software, analog and digital electronics, and microcomputers, and engineering standards to the building, testing, operation, and maintenance of electrical/electronic(s) systems;

(b) the application of natural sciences and mathematics at or above the level of algebra and trigonometry to the building, testing, operation, and maintenance of electrical/ electronic systems;

(c) the ability to analyze, design, and implement one or more of the following: control systems, instrumentation systems, communications systems, computer systems, or power systems;

(d) the ability to apply project management techniques to electrical/electronic(s) systems;

(e) the ability to utilize differential and integral calculus, as a minimum, to characterize the performance of electrical/electronic systems.

These five criteria are satisfied in the Michigan Tech BS in Electrical Engineering Technology program.
