Dr. Lautala was appointed in August, 2012 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He is also the Director of Rail Transportation Program (RTP), position that he has held since October, 2007. Pasi has his BS from Tampere University of Technology in Finland and his MSc. And Ph.D. degrees from Michigan Tech University. Dr. Lautala is leading and coordinating the overall development of the Program and most rail transportation related education and research at Tech. His previous experience includes work with Finnish Railways prior to his arrival in the US, as well as five years of railroad and highway-engineering consulting experience in Chicago before his return to Michigan Tech. Dr. Lautala is also the Michigan Tech Principal Investigator for the National University Rail Transportation Center (NURail), funded by the US Department of Transportation and for several other rail- related research and education projects. Dr. Lautala is a member of Michigan Commission for Supply Chain and Transportation Logistics Collaboration, the Vice Chair of ASCE Rail Transportation Committee and Vice Chair of the TRB AR040, Rail Freight Transportation Committee. He is also actively involved in the AREMA Education and Training Committee. Dr. Lautala is also the Associate Director of Education for NURail Center, a rail-focused, Tier-1 University Transportation Center (UTC) under the US Department of Transportation (DOT) Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) program.
