Welcome to Winter Carnival 2019

February 6–9, 2019
Years of Innovation STEM
from this Snowy Situation

Organized by Blue Key National Honor Society since 1934, Winter Carnival started in 1922 and has grown into one of the biggest annual winter celebrations in the nation. Known for huge, intricate snow statues around campus and the community, Carnival also brings Huskies together to compete in broomball, comedy skits, human ice bowling, and a queen coronation.

Queen Candidates

Winter Carnival Queen & Miss Congeniality

Jill Poliskey
Sponsors: Saint Albert the Great, Suomi Home Bakery & Restaurant

Hi! I’m Jill and I’m a fourth year Biological Sciences pre-medical student originally from Midland, MI. I am excited and honored to be representing St. Albert the Great University Parish as a Queens finalist. Growing up and hearing about Tech from my dad, an alumnus, I was always amazed by the students at Tech for making it through the whole winter in Houghton. However, once I became one of those crazy students, winter-time traditions have become a favorite of mine, especially Winter Carnival. Over the years, I have enjoyed participating with St. Al’s in events ranging from the all-nighter statue to the human dog sled race. Besides having fun in the snow, some of my hobbies include playing music, swing dancing, drinking tea, traveling, and exploring in the Keweenaw. Throughout my time at Tech, I have played in the Superior Wind Symphony, served as the President of the Pastoral Council at St. Al’s, and volunteered with many local organizations including Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly and the Omega House. My experiences at Tech and in the local area have instilled in me a desire to serve in rural communities as a physician in the future, hopefully right here in God’s Country! Thank you all for your support, and in particular my sponsor Suomi Home Bakery & Restaurant. Have a wonderful Winter Carnival!

1st Runner-Up & Audience Choice

Rachel Violassi
Sponsor: Sig Tau & Alpha Gam, Cyberia Cafe

Happy Winter Carnival 2019! My name is Rachael Violassi and I am a third year mechanical engineering student from Davisburg, MI. I am thrilled to represent Alpha Gamma Delta as a Queen’s finalist for Winter Carnival! I enjoy running, swimming, hand-lettering, and volunteering. Michigan Tech has provided countless opportunities for me to do what I love and continuously learn something new every day. On campus, I have been involved with several student organizations such as Alpha Gamma Delta, Circle K International, Society of Women Engineers, Mind Trekkers, and the Rowing Club. While at Michigan Tech, I have had the privilege of serving as VP of Administration for Alpha Gamma Delta, Secretary for Wadsworth Student Hall Association, social chair for Circle K, and worked as a Student Coordinator for the Center of Pre-College Outreach and an Orientation Team Leader. This coming year, I am looking forward to serve as President of Alpha Gamma Delta! I want to thank everyone for supporting me, especially Cyberia Cafe and Alpha Gamma Delta! Have a great Winter Carnival!

2nd Runner-Up

Natalie McGrath
Sponsor: Army ROTC, Maurices

Hi everyone! I'm Natalie McGrath, a fourth year Computer Engineer from Ham Lake, MN. I am incredibly honored to be representing Army ROTC and Maurices for this year's Winter Carnival Queens Competition. Most mornings, you can find me in the SDC for a good old-fashioned Army workout, sometimes more often if I'm feeling highly motivated. I work on campus as a student security officer at Public Safety (but don't worry, I've probably never given you a ticket). I came to Michigan Tech because I grew up with three sisters and wanted to know what it was like to have brothers. I volunteer as much as I can with Habitat for Humanity. When I find some free time, I enjoy crocheting (practicing for when I'm an old cat lady), painting (in case engineering doesn't work out) and hiking around the Keweenaw (because have you seen the view?). I also study Russian during the summers and would love to visit sometime. When I graduate, I hope to commission as an Army Cyber Officer. Thank you to everyone that has supported through my entire Tech career. Let’s have an amazing Winter Carnival!

Candidate

Brook Greening
Sponsors: Delta Phi Epsilon, Celebrations Bridal & Formal

Hello World! My name is Brook Greening and I am a fourth-year Computer Science student from the small town of Shepherd, Michigan. I am so excited to have the opportunity to represent Michigan Tech and share my love for this campus. When I first came to Michigan Tech I fell in love with the outdoors, community, and charm this town had to offer, and since attending the feeling I came for has only grown stronger. While on campus, I have worked in Information Technology, and I was an Orientation Team Leader twice. Along with work, I have also been the President of Copper Country Coders; an organization that teaches 6-12th graders in the surrounding areas how to code. I have held the roles of Sisterhood, Stage Revue, and Vice President of Recruitment for Delta Phi Epsilon, and I have been in the Humane Interface Design Enterprise (HIDE) for just over a year now. Along with these organizations I am also involved in the Greek honor society Order of Omega and Women in Computer Science (WiCS). With all of my involvements and love for Michigan Tech, I believe that I would make a great Winter Carnival Queen. I would like to give a very special thanks to my sponsors Delta Phi Epsilon and Celebrations Bridal & Formal.

Candidate

Alexandra Costanzo
Sponsor: Memorial Union Board, Chickadees

Hey there, Huskies! My name is Alex Costanzo and I am the lucky candidate representing the Memorial Union Board and the amazing Chickadees. My hometown is Eastpointe, MI and I am in my fourth year of studying Civil Engineering with plans to graduate in the Spring. I will then be returning in the Fall to start my accelerated Master’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering. You can usually find me on campus doing homework with friends, blasting my trombone in the Huskies Pep Band, volunteering at a MUB Event, or working in the Student Activities office. I am super excited to be participating in the Winter Carnival Queen’s Competition! This is my first time ever running for a royalty position and I am thankful for my sponsors for supporting me through the process. In past Carnival’s I have enjoyed playing in the Pep Band and seeing the massive statues come to life while eating all the delicious food at the all nighter (I recommend the deep fried Oreos). Thank you again to MUB Board and Chickadees. I hope everyone has a rockin’ Carnival!

Candidate

Heather Woodrum
Sponsors: Theta Chi Epsilon, Regis Salon

Hey! My name is Heather Woodrum and I'm a 4th-year senior from the village of Carleton, Michigan. I am honored to be representing Theta Chi Epsilon Sorority this year. During my time here at Tech, I have been involved in a lot; I competed with the Michigan Tech Cheer Team for 2 years, participated on the Michigan Tech Dance Team for a year, and am now the coach of the cheer team! I've been a lifeguard, taught swim lessons, been the Public Relations Chair of Theta Chi Epsilon, and participated in countless other activities. During the (very) little time we receive warm weather in the Keweenaw, I enjoy hiking and swimming. During the winter months, I love to snowboard, ice skate, play broomball, and, on occasion, go snowmobiling with my friends. Each year, I look forward to Winter Carnival; from all-nighter and month long statues, to snowboard racing, broomball, and watching Stage Revue, I've loved every bit. Now, I am extremely excited to be participating in Queens! Thank you to Theta Chi Epsilon and Regis Salon for sponsoring me as a Queen's Candidate!

Candidate

Lauren Fallu
Sponsors: Sigma Phi Epsilon, Swift True Value

My name is Lauren Fallu and I am sponsored by the fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon & Swift True Value. I am a fourth year Biomedical Engineering student at Michigan Tech and an active member of the Women’s Club Volleyball Team. Being on the team has provided me the opportunity to build new friendships, represent Tech, and most importantly, maintain academic excellence all while playing the sport that I am passionate about. As my senior year is coming to close, I continually look for new ways get involved to help enrich my college experience. One of my favorite memories at Michigan Tech is the Winter Carnival All-Nighter because this is exclusive to Houghton and Michigan Tech. Each year, during Winter Carnival Time, I am reminded how great it is that the community and Tech come together and unite as one. Becoming nominated, and now a Queens Finalist, has provided me with another wonderful memory. I would be honored to be selected to represent the women of Michigan Tech as the Winter Carnival Queen, and I could not be more excited about this opportunity.

Candidate

Katie Palmcook
Sponsors: Beta Sigma Theta, Roy's Pasties & Bakery

Hi! My name is Katie Palmcook, I’m a 3rd year Civil Engineering major with a Spanish minor from Marquette, MI. I am in the Delta Phi Epsilon sorority and a part of the Greek honor society Order of Omega. I was an OTL this past year and am applying to be one for this upcoming school year. I will be studying abroad this summer in Costa Rica! I have participated in all aspects of winter carnival from special events and statue to stage revue and now queens. I love spending time with my family and friends, being outdoors, playing sports, singing, dancing, and trying new things. I am thrilled to be a part of this queens competition and hope to make some new friends during this new experience. I would like to thank my sponsoring organization Beta Sigma Theta fraternity for giving me the opportunity to represent them in this competition and my merchant sponsor Roy's Pasties & Bakery for their support.
