Lieutenant Colonel Christian Thompson's most recent assignment before coming to Michigan Technological University was Commander of the 864th Engineer Battalion and Division Engineer for the 7th Infantry Division. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin, Masters of Science degrees in Geology and in Geophysics from the University of Missouri Science and Technology, a Master of Science degree in Administration from Central Michigan University, and was commissioned into the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from the Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning, GA in January 1998.

He has served in multiple commands and staff positions at ten different duty locations to include Sapper Platoon Leader in the 588th Engineer Battalion, Company Commander of the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 9th Engineer Battalion, Battalion Executive Officer of the 2nd Engineer Battalion, Security Forces Advisor to the 4th Brigade, 203rd Afghan National Army, Deputy Commander for the US Army Corps of Engineers District at St. Paul, MN, and Battalion Commander of the 864th Engineer Battalion. His operational deployments include NATO Kosovo Force (KFOR 4A), Operation Iraqi Freedom II, Operation Iraqi Freedom 06-08 during Surge operations in Baghdad, and Operation Enduring Freedom XIII.

LTC Thompson is a graduate of the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the Army Command and General Staff College, the Army Pre-Command Course, the University Senior Leader Course, and the Army Airborne and Air Assault Schools. He is a Genocide Studies Fellow and is a lifetime member of the Auschwitz Institute for Peace and Reconciliation. He is also a lifetime member of the Army Engineer Association, member of the Society of American Military Engineers, a lifetime member of VFW Post #56, and lifetime member of the 864th Engineer Alumni Association. His awards and decorations include three Bronze Star Medals, five Meritorious Service Medals, four Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, the Humanitarian Service Medal, two NATO Medals, the Combat Action Badge, the Gold German Armed Forces Badge for Military Proficiency, and the Bronze Order of the de Fleury Medal.

LTC Thompson and his wife of 25 years are the proud parents of four lovely daughters.
