Tech Talks Highlight Alumni Reunion

More than 70,000 Huskies around the world share memories of being tested by epic snowstorms—and exams. Of building engines, bridges—and careers. Of meeting the professor, or roommate—or mentor that changed their lives forever. Michigan Tech alumni reunite annually to celebrate traditions. To create connections.

And continue to ask questions beyond the classroom.

In honor of that lifelong learning, here are the Twitter summaries of this year's Alumni Reunion Tech Talks on Unscripted.

Nancy Auer and Paul Buda Granted Emerita/Emeritus Status

At its regular meeting in Houghton yesterday, Michigan Tech’s Board of Trustees approved emerita/emeritus rank for retiring professors Nancy Auer and Paul Buda.

Auer has been on the faculty of Michigan Tech’s Department of Biological Sciences since 1984.  She is known for her research on the restoration of Great Lakes species such as the lake sturgeon and arctic grayling.

Buda has served on the School of Technology faculty since 1993. He taught surveying and was inducted in the Academy of Teaching Excellence in 2003.

The Board also recognized five employees for 35 or more years of service to the University. They are Marty Auer (CEE—36 years); Paul Buda (SoT—35 years); Ralph Hodek (CEE—47 years); Karen Jakovic (Dining Services—35 years) and Raymond Lasanen (Purchasing—35 years).

Board Chair Terry Woychowski announced the formation of a Presidential Transition Committee to draft a plan to help the successful presidential candidate meet with appropriate individuals and groups, as well as the overall university community, and to identify key areas of interest and need.

Chemical Sciences and Engineering Closure

As part of the University chemical stores facility project, contractors have to do work to the main water service inside the building. This requires that the water service to the building is shutoff for an extended period of time.

All water service to the building will be off: toilets, sinks, labs, eye washes/safety showers, etc. In addition, the water will be off for the courtyard "bubble" greenhouse.

This work will take place on Saturday (Aug 5). If everything runs as expected water service will be restored at end of the day on Saturday. To protect the safety of the campus community, the building will be closed:

Start time: midnight tonight
End time: midnight Saturday night
During this closure, no one will be allowed to occupy the building and card access will be turned off.

Direct questions about the work to Facilities Management. Direct questions about the building closure to Environmental Health and Safety.
