Board of Trustees to Meet Today

A Formal session of the Michigan Tech Board of Trustees will begin at 9 a.m. this morning in Memorial Union Ballroom B. 

The meeting will begin with a change of Chair. Terry Woychowski, Chair for 2016-17 will succeed Julie Fream, Chair for 2015-16 and Linda Kennedy will become Vice Chair for the 2016-17 fiscal year.

Alumni Reunion Begins Today

More than 500 visitors are expected for three days of tours, talks, cruises, awards and a pasty picnic as Michigan Tech's Alumni reunion begins today.
 
Things kick off this morning with a Welcome Breakfast and campus tours. Morning "Tech Talks" focus on rejuvenating rail transportation with Pasi Lautila (CEE) (10 a.m. Fisher 135) and the wolves of Isle Royale with John Vucetich (SFRES) (11 a.m. Fisher 135).
 
Afternoon activities include a cruise aboard the MV-Ranger III. Boarding will be at 12:30 p.m. with departure at 1 p.m. from the Isle Royale National Park office.
 
There will be a pasty making demonstration at 1:30 p.m. in Douglass Houghton Hall. A taste testing will follow and at 4 p.m. hundreds of alumni are expected for the Pasty Picnic featuring a classic Keweenaw dinner of pasties, pickled eggs and Keweenaw Brewing Company micro-brews. 
 
Tomorrow's activities include the All-Class Alumni Breakfast, Class Year gatherings, "Stuff-a-Husky," tours aboard the RV Agassiz and campus and department open houses. 
 
The Annual Alumni Reunion Dinner and Awards Ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Memorial Union Ballroom. This year's winners are:
Outstanding Young Alumn Awards— Benjamin Almquist '04 and Jonathon Aho '08
Outstanding Service Award—Joshua '03 and Jana '05 Fogarty
Distinguished Alumni Award—William Bernard, Jr. '69
Humanitarian Award—James Tanis '57 '58
Silver Medal Honoree—Russ Gronevelt '69
 
Saturday is devoted to reconnecting with the Copper Country with events such as the Keweenaw Alumni Chapter 5K Run/Walk for Scholarship. Read more and view a complete schedule.
 

Payroll Review to be Offered

Payroll Services will host a 45-minute workshop at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10 in the Memorial Union Alumni Lounge.

The purpose of the workshop is to review the Payroll Services Standard Practice Guide and answer payroll-related questions. This session is offered to assist supervisors, timekeepers and department administrators in following time and reporting procedures. The guide is located here.

New Funding

Kristin Schmitt (SFRES/ESC) is the principal investigator on a project that has received $110,000 from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, U.S. Forest Service. The project is "Support of the USDA Northern Forest Climate Hub." This funding is for the first two years of a potential five-year project.

Thai Cuisine at Khana Khazana

Food from Thailand is featured at tomorrow's Khana Khazana. Serving is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the food truck in the MUB circle across from the Library.

The menu includes:

Pad Kra Pao Neua—Stir Fry Beef with Basil

Yum Pon La Mai—Spicy Fruit Salad

Mon Tod—Fried Sweet Potato

Library Lean Tour

Van Pelt and Opie Library staff invite faculty, staff and students to learn more about continuous improvement at the Library Lean Tour from 1 to 4 p.m Wednesday, Aug. 10.

Tour the staffed posters to learn more about Lean concepts and to see firsthand how we're applying Lean tools. The event takes approximately 45 minutes and is an open hours format, with refreshments, so please come anytime between 1 and 4 p.m.

Tech Football Picked Third in GLIAC North

Michigan Tech was picked third in the North Division in the 2016 GLIAC Preseason Football Coaches' Poll, which was released yesterday. Grand Valley State and Ferris State were picked ahead of the Huskies.

The North Division was rounded out with Wayne State, Hillsdale, Saginaw Valley State in slots 4-6 while Northern Michigan and Northwood tied for seventh.

Ashland headlined the six-team South Division followed by Ohio Dominican and Tiffin who were tied for second. Findlay, Walsh and Lake Erie rounded out the South.

The Huskies finished the 2015 campaign third in the GLIAC North with a 7-3 record – including a perfect 5-0 mark at Sherman Field – for the program's sixth-straight winning season.

André Laplume (SBE) and Joshua Pearce (MSE/ECE) co-authored the article "Global value chains from a 3D printing perspective," which was published in the Journal of International Business Studies.

3D Print ran a story on 3-D printing research co-authored by Michigan Tech alumni Amberlee Haselhuhn (MSE) and Bas Wijnen (MSE), undergraduate student Michael Buhr (ME), with faculty Paul Sanders (MSE) and Joshua Pearce (MSE/ECE).  The story is titled "Aluminum Alloys: Researchers Explore the Microstructure-Property Relationship in Metal 3D Printing."
