Fair Labor Standards Act FAQ

Human Resources continues to work on analyzing the changes to the overtime rule which increases the salary threshold for a position to be considered exempt from overtime.

As announced, on May 18, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) released the final rule increasing the salary threshold from $455 per week to $913 per week for a position to be considered exempt from overtime.

Employers will need to be in compliance with the new regulations by December 1, 2016.

Positions with a primary responsibility of teaching (including faculty) are not effected by the DOL change.

Human Resources has created a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page. The FAQ is posted on the Human Resources website main page under Resources.

Updates will be made to the FAQ as additional information is released and/or determined.

We ask you continue to direct any questions regarding this DOL change to Employment Services in Human Resources at 7-2280.

Try a Password Manager

Last week Michigan Tech IT reminded you that you should create long, unique passwords for every site you visit, and that you should change them often.

However, we also understand that you might worry about forgetting your passwords. That is why we also recommend that you utilize a password manager like LastPass.

When using a password manager, you only need to remember one master password, which will manage and auto-fill all the others. You can find more information on LastPass here.

If you have any questions about password managers, contact us at it-help@mtu.edu or call 7-1111.
