Tech's PCMI Still Number One

Michigan Tech ranks as the top Peace Corps Master’s International (PCMI) university nationwide for the eighth consecutive year. With 35 PCMI graduate students currently serving as Peace Corps Volunteers, Michigan Tech has earned the top spot in the 2013 rankings of PCMI and Paul D. Coverdell Fellows graduate schools. Tulane University placed second.

The PCMI program enables graduate students to incorporate Peace Corps service for credit as part of their master’s degree curriculum. The Coverdell Fellows program provides returned Peace Corps volunteers with scholarships, internships in underserved American communities and stipends to help them earn an advanced degree after they complete their Peace Corps service.

Reminder: Asbestos Abatement in Administration Building

This is a reminder of the asbestos abatement work that will be happening in the Administration building this week. The area impacted will be all offices on the west side of the first floor including the Dean of Students, COMPASS and Financial Aid. We will also be abating the hallway south of the elevators and east of Financial Aid to the bathrooms.

Northwoods Environmental will be the abatement contractor. They are already working in the area to remove carpeting and put up plastic sheeting. No asbestos abatement will begin until 5 p.m. on Friday, May 10, but it will continue around the clock until the work is done Sunday evening. During the abatement, the building air handlers will be shut off and all other safety precautions will be in place. Signs will be posted accordingly on the weekend.

While we do not anticipate any problems we are encouraging people not to be in the building during the weekend. It is possible that with the air handlers being off for the weekend, and depending on temperatures, the building could be cool next Monday. Please consider this as you prepare for work.

Following completion of the abatement work, the general contractor, J. Clark Construction will be onsite to remodel the space. Our anticipated completion date is July 10 with staff back in their offices on Monday, July 15.

Reminder: Pat Gotschalk Retirement Reception

Pat Gotschalk, associate dean of students, is retiring after 10 years with Michigan Tech. Her retirement reception is today from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Building, Ballroom B2-3. Remarks will be made at 2:45 p.m. Please join us in wishing Pat all the best in her retirement. Light refreshments will be served.

2013 Green Film Series: Issues and DialogueON:

The final 2013 Green Film series movie will be tomorrow at 7 p.m. in Fisher 135. Chasing Ice depicts James Balog's journey to photograph the world's changing glaciers. The film is free, and there will be coffee and dessert along with a facilitated discussion with Sarah Green (Chem).

Savvy Entrepreneur-Capital Fundraising, May 14

Learn capital fundraising plan best practices from an expert panel and case study discussion via two-way interactive web conferencing. This event will take place Tuesday, May 14, in the conference room of the Advanced Technology and Development Center. Social networking with refreshments begins at 5:30 p.m. with a panel discussion from 6 to 8 p.m.

Don Baker, with Safford and Baker, PLLC, legal advisors to technology businesses, will lead the panel discussion. All participants can get a full copy of Don Baker's article on these CFP best practices. CTL Tip of the Week

Copying Content from Another Canvas Course
As you prepare for next semester’s courses, you may want to use or repurpose previously created course content. Canvas makes it easy for you to copy or import content from one of your courses into another. You can choose to copy all the content (including assignments, modules, files, quizzes, pages, etc.) or you can select individual items to copy.

Imports do not include any student data, enrollments, or input (like assignment submissions, grades, or discussion posts), so it’s a good way to use your previously created content for a new class of students. You can import content into new Banner-created courses and easily adjust event and due dates. Another typical use is to manually create a new blank course, copy content into that course, and use it as a template course with contents available whenever you need it.
