Staff Council Looking for Members to Serve

(This is one of a series of stories about Staff Council, one of the key representative units on campus, which invites new members to its annual organizational meeting at noon, Thursday, Sept. 15, in Memorial Union Ballroom A.)

Here is what Staff Council does:

The Council, created in 1991, provides a forum for staff issues and concerns, recognition for members' achievements and service, resources for professional development, and helping provide events and opportunities that enhance the working environment and campus community.

Staff Council sponsors these events annually: Making A Difference Awards, Family Fun Day and Staff Service Recognition Banquet; as well, Council hosts the President's periodic Campus Forums.

Members serve on search committees and help out with other special University initiatives and task forces; create and distribute the Employee Wall Calendar; sponsor an annual blood drive; and cosponsor the biannual staff development day.

Air Force Cadet Excelled in Summer Training; He was Too Good

Cadet Robert McNeil, a junior in the Air Force ROTC program, reflected well on himself and Michigan Tech this summer. He was named a distinguished graduate of a four-week field training exercise--what amounts to a boot camp for officer candidates.

The proverbial boot camp is equal doses of physical regimen, verbal abuse, and mental pressure. Unfazed by it all, McNeil did so well that he was judged to have performed too well--"too at ease," and "too much insight," his evaluation reads.

McNeil, a native of Grand Rapids who is studying computer science, was one of 16 Tech cadets to attend the field training in Alabama and Mississippi, where 2,000 cadets gathered.

One reason he excelled: he's 27 and served five years as an enlisted man in the Air Force. So he'd been through boot camp before. He describes the officer candidate training as "difficult--a lot of information shoved into not much time. You have to think, not just do."

He had attended Tech's LeaderShape program and learned the ropes: "You have to take care of everybody else, not yourself."

He stayed focused. "I showed up, and when they yelled at me, I completed the task at hand."

Cpt. Frank Christiana, operations flight commander for the Tech detachment, says cadets are accepted into the select field training based on academic performance, physical fitness, standardized test scores, and the detachment commander's assessment of leadership potential.

He said McNeil, who was one of only 8 percent of trainees to graduate with distinction, displayed "really, really high performance." Christiana adds, "This is a big deal for us in our world. It shows off the University and the detachment."

Christiana has McNeil's performance evaluation on hand. It describes him as either "outstanding" or "excellent" on seven measures, such as leadership, communication skills, judgment, and decision making.

He describes the training as "garrison stuff" (keeping beds and lockers in order) and outdoor activity (marching, running, shooting and living in the field)--all of it "intense."

He says Tech cadets typically attend the training between their sophomore and junior years.

Overall, the 16 Tech cadets who attended either met or exceeded the AFROTC national averages in GPA (3.22), physical fitness (95.8 out of 100) and academic testing.

Professor William Sproule (CEE) will present the first Civil Engineering Seminar of the fall, "Take Me Out to the Ball Game-Transportation Planning for Sports Stadiums," from 4 to 5 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 1, in Dow 642. The public is welcome to attend.
