The Other Hubbell

Lingg message - JayAHubbellSchool-1

Last edition, Doug Davies ’69, ’72 asked:

Reading the piece about Hubbell Hall got me wondering. What was the name of the building that was used as the forestry building back in the mid sixties? It was off campus, toward Houghton, and I can remember having to literally run to make it to class. A real experience in winter!

John F. Lingg ’65 responded with a photo taken in late February 1964, adding, “Jay A. Hubbell School—forestry classes, and others, too. I recall an economics class. It was a hustle from Sherman Gym.”

Gail Richter ’61 replied as well: “The name of the building that Doug Davies asked about was Hubbell School. It was the forestry building, and the med techs had a few classes there. Econ as well. Speaking of the big windows, there was one econ prof whose name I’ve forgotten who liked to wander to the windows while he was lecturing. He would kill the flies at the window with his fingers. He was often referred to as “___ and his magic window.” It was definitely a long walk if you had a class on the other end of campus or lived in the dorms. Pryor House (for coeds ’59-60) was across and a little west of the College Motel and Hubbell. I can’t remember if the H&T house was east or west of Hubbell.”
