Just about everyone had that same look, a mix of excitement and apprehension, as they got out of their cars.

New students, parents and guardians, siblings, and significant others. Move-in was here. For students the day they’d been waiting for since their last day of high school. For parents, perhaps a day they’d been slightly dreading for 18 years.

Not an easy transition for anyone. But a mix of current students and staff were there to help. Volunteers pitched in to haul carefully packed boxes, mini fridges, favorite snacks, and a few reminders of home.

For most of the students and their families the reaction was the same.

“Wow, you’re all here to help us?”

After many miles, a little rain, and probably a few tears, the helping hands were a welcome, welcome to Michigan Tech.

And what a difference a year or two can make. While waiting patiently for elevators, some first-year students spoke nervously about the challenges awaiting them. Their peers who’d been in their shoes calmly reassured them. You’ll make it. And there will be plenty of help along the way.

Another reason why Tech is different. From our president and vice presidents greeting new students and their families at check-in, to a carefully planned orientation week designed to position first-years for success, the Tech you remember is still doing things the right way.

This week, another year of classes, research, and discoveries begins. It’s a time full of energy and anticipation for students, faculty, and staff alike. But, everything has its season, and before we know it, these new students will grasp that diploma, and smile triumphantly at their families in the crowd, and just like that, they’ll be you.

Welcome, Huskies. We can’t wait to see what future you’re about to create.
