Tech in the News

It’s been quite a spring for Michigan Tech media coverage. From the Detroit News to National Public Radio, from TV coverage on three different networks to Associated Press wire stories, Michigan Tech has been making headlines.

Here are just a few of the news stories about Michigan Tech that have been published or aired recently.

National Public Radio—American Public Media’s Marketplace program interviewed Pasi Lautala, assistant professor of civil engineering and head of Michigan Tech’s Rail Transportation Program, about freight rail transportation in the US and elsewhere around the world.

The Associated Press (AP), an international wire service published in newspapers and broadcast on radio and TV stations worldwide, reported on the prosthetic ankle equipped with a camera to help it see where it is going, developed by Mo Rastgaar, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and winner of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) prestigious CAREER award.

Fortune, a leading financial and business magazine, published a commentary by Humanities alumna Roxane Gay, titled “Women Shouldn’t Have to Lead Like Men to be Successful.”

CBS-TV’s UP Matters program, Sports Illustrated, and hundreds of other news outlets reported on Huckies hockey forward Tanner Kero’s nomination as one of 10 national finalists for the NHL’s prestigious Hobey Baker Player of the Year award. As the hockey team headed to the national championships and the men’s and women’s basketball teams won regional honors, nearly 2,500 news stories about Michigan Tech athletics were published or aired during February and March.

The Daily Mail, a newspaper in the UK, reported on Physics Professor Robert Nemiroff’s controversial report to the American Astronomical Society’s annual meeting, saying that a phenomenon known as a photonic boom can actually exceed the speed of light.

The National Geographic Society published a report on two wolves that crossed an ice bridge from the mainland to Isle Royale National Park this winter (although they did not stay), and its implications for the future of the wolves on the island.   They interviewed Research Professor Rolf Peterson, who for decades led Michigan Tech’s study of the interaction of wolves and moose on Isle Royale.

The Detroit News quoted President Glenn Mroz, among other Michigan public university leaders, commenting on Governor Rick Snyder’s proposed budget and urging a hike in the tuition cap.

Technology Century, a newswire published by the Engineering Society of Detroit, ran a news story about the School of Business and Economics’ Applied Portfolio Management Program (APMP) winning a national student investment competition for the second year in a row.

Science 2.0, a leading science news blog, reported on Assistant Professor Joseph Wagenbrenners’ research on the impact of salvage logging after a major forest fire. Wagenbreener is on the faculty of the School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science.  The results and recommendations of his multi-year study were published in the journal Forest Ecology and Management.
