The Michigan Tech Huskies have built a rich tradition of excellence in intercollegiate athletics. All sports, with the exception of hockey and Nordic skiing, compete in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, one of the top NCAA Division II leagues in the nation. Michigan Tech has a great tradition in its lone Division I sport, men’s ice hockey, with three national titles. Michigan Tech has produced numerous All-Americans, Academic All-Americans, Olympians, and professional athletes. Men’s teams include basketball, cross country, football, hockey, Nordic skiing, tennis, and track and field. Women’s teams include basketball, cross country, Nordic skiing, soccer, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Intramural-Recreational Sports gives you the chance to participate in organized sports and recreational activities. Team sports include basketball, 3-on-3 basketball, bowling, flag football, ice hockey, inner tube water polo, soccer, soccer fours, softball, swim meet, dodgeball, volleyball, wallyball, water polo, floor hockey, ultimate Frisbee, and sand volleyball fours.
Individual and dual sports include badminton singles and doubles, basketball hotshot, basketball shoot-out, basketball free throw contest, golf two-person scramble, disc golf singles and doubles, racquetball singles and doubles, racquetball ladder, sand volleyball twos, swimming, table tennis singles and doubles, tennis singles and doubles, and turkey trot.
The Intramural Schedule of Events (women, men, co-rec) as well as the Intramural Handbook are available at the beginning of each semester in the MUB, residence halls, the entrance to the SDC, and the Intramural Office, second floor of the SDC. All information is posted on our website and on the bulletin board across from the office. Some intramural information and results are printed weekly in the school newspaper, the Lode.

The SDC is a 235,000-square-foot athletic complex that offers students, faculty, staff, and the community an opportunity to participate in a variety of indoor recreational activities. SDC grounds also include outdoor areas. Registered students have authorization and are encouraged to use the SDC facilities.

Classrooms—Three classrooms host athletic sports, exercise science classes, intramurals, and student organization events.
- Dance Room—With its mirrored walls and specially designed floor to provide greater resiliency, this area is used extensively by exercise science classes, athletic sports, community programs, and student organizations.
- Fields—Sherman football and soccer field, softball fields, sand volleyball courts, and soccer fields are available for exercise science classes, varsity sports, intramurals and student organizations.
- Fitness Center—The air-conditioned facility is located on the second floor, with TVs, carpet and rubber matting, hammer strength machines, and free weights. The full range of equipment includes treadmills, stair climbers, elliptical machines, rowers, and recumbent or upright bikes.
- Gates Tennis Center—Enjoy the four indoor courts along with lockers and showers; as well as a pro-shop for most of your equipment needs. We also offer racquet stringing and tennis lessons. Call 487-2774 for court reservations.
- Locker Rooms—Men’s and women’s locker rooms include saunas and showers. Towel service is provided for a nominal fee.
- MacInnes Student Ice Arena—Students or organizations can rent ice time for a reduced fee. Open skating, drop-in hockey, and public skating hours are offered during the regular academic year.
- Mont Ripley Ski Hill—Michigan Tech’s ski hill is in Ripley, across the bridge from campus.
- Multipurpose Room—This spacious facility has four hardwood floor basketball courts—two NCAA regulation, ninety-four-foot courts in the middle and an eighty-four-foot court at each end. Synthetic flooring covers a regulation, five-lane, two-hundred-meter track that surrounds the basketball courts. The room also has volleyball courts, badminton courts, and a rock-climbing wall. Divider curtains separate each of the four basketball courts and make five more versatile spaces for student organizations to use.
- Nordic Ski Trails and Recreational Forest—Michigan Tech’s trail system is located right across the street from the Student Development Complex or the south end of the Michigan Tech campus on MacInnes Drive. The 35 kilometers of trails are great for biking, running, hiking, and cross country skiing.
- Pool—The eight-lane, twenty-five-yard heated swimming pool is designed for recreational swimming and instruction. A separate diving well has two one-meter boards and a five-meter platform.
- Portage Lake Golf Course—Tech’s eighteen-hole course is just south of campus on US Highway 41.
- Rifle Range—Located in the SDC basement, the range accommodates the following student organizations with weekly hours: Competition Rifle Team, Pistol Club, Practical Pistol Club, and the Archery Club.
- Six Courts—Reserve squash, racquetball, or wallyball courts by calling 487-2761.
- Ticket Office—Gear up for basketball, volleyball, badminton, soccer, racquetball, wallyball, and cross country skiing. Rental payments must be made at the SDC Ticket Office before you can pick up certain items.
- Wood Gym—Home for the Huskies varsity basketball and volleyball games.
